Large and fine Eye of Horus. Late Period, 600-300 B.C. 2 3/4 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches high. Intact. Mounted. From an old New Jersey private collection. The wedjat, or Eye of Horus, was a popular amulet worn for health and protection. It represents Horus’ left eye lost in battle and later restored magically by Hathor. At top is acid-etched frieze with leafing oak branch and acorn-nibbling squirrels seated on applied flat stone girdle supported by tooled irregular stones.
