Lovely early Victorian sterling silver paste pendant with a border of paste stones and royal blue enamel, most likely was a pendant given as a gift to a loved one. The beautiful blue color represented innocence and virtue and was probably given to a young woman by her suitor. Women adored their paste jewelry as much as their diamonds, so the use of paste stones indicates this was likely owned by a member of the "upper crust". The pendant is approximately 1 1/4 inches.

Elegant 15K English fob with a tapered regency style shape and an intaglio of a heraldic coat of arms. The base of the fob is chalcedony, a form of quartz that was available in several colors. The intaglio shows a proud lion in passant and a drape on either side falling from the reeded rod. The drape supports the shield with the heads of three fierce looking dragons or lions. Fantastic heraldic monsters, whether lions or dragons (we are not absolutely sure) were a symbol of courage...

Intricately carved in high relief of lava ( limestone and other rocks from the Mount Vesuvius region) our brooch offers a rare depiction of a Titan subject, the ruler of the Titans, Cronus (Greek) or Saturn (Roman). Cronus, the father of Zeus, was the harvest god and carried a sickle, a tool used in harvesting grain. Cronos is also associated with time (Chronos) and is sometimes depicted with an hourglass, a reminder of the brevity of our time on earth...

The rediscovery of the ruins of Pompeii in the mid 18th century revived an immense classical revival with renewed interest in Roman, Greek and Egyptian archeological motifs. There were two Egyptian revivals over the course of the nineteenth century, during which Egyptian classical forms were all the rage throughout Europe and somewhat later in England. Our earrings date from the second revival later in the century...
