Russian 875 novelty cigarette box, ca 1880. Rectangular with straight sides and flat and hinged cover. Gilt-washed interior. Trompe l’oeil wood panels with realistic grain and tax stamps. Based on the packaging for Pheresli, a cigarette brand evocative of raffish chic. A similar box is described in a novel by fin-de-siecle writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Marked.
