This Cockscomb and Currants (aka Grapes and Oak Leaf) applique quilt is done with very fine stitching. The quilting depicts patterns of ferns and a variety of leaves. The applique border beautifully repeats the arms of the primary blocks to create a graceful frame. The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. It is believed to have been made by Miss Effie Kinder in Jackson, Missouri; circa 1870. Measurements are 74" x 96".

This touching Stars quilt has the most unusual addition of appliqued flowers giving a nice "pop" to the already bold pattern. The solid red used for the deep triangle border is another element that adds drama. It is well quilted with small clamshell patterns. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 84 inches square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's.

This applique quilt is light, airy and graceful. The body is quilted with a crosshatch pattern with half wreaths along the border and full wreaths in the corners. The leaves look like grape leaves which is why I think the circles are not berries but that is open to interpretation. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1860. Measurements are 78" x 80".

Elegant Tree Everlasting quilt pattern done with glazed chintz. Well quilted with oak leaves in the white bars and cable patterns on the chintz. The chintz is the same fabric throughout but is distributed so that one can see pillars, lattice baskets and flowers in different areas. Excellent condition; circa 1850. The name of this quilt pattern, Old Italian Block, is a mystery to me but it seems to be well established. This example is done with a glorious combination of stunning fabrics. All are in unwashed, pristine condition. The outer border is a highly glazed chintz. Oddly, the back is a cotton muslin. One would have expected a "dressier" choice given the front but perhaps the maker indulged all she could with the front of the quilt...

Feeling patriotic, anyone? This unusual Shields quilt is combined with diamonds in squares to create an original, all-American design. Half diamonds frame the pattern well. The quilting is not elaborate. It is done in straight lines in the body of the quilt and diamonds in the border. The concentric diamonds are machine appliqued. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is one light smudge that can likely be removed with a wash but I have done nothing to it as I do not find it bothersome...

This Thousand Pyramids quilt is made of a wonderful grouping of early 19th century fabrics. It is quilted with double clamshell quilting in the body and an unusual design of concentric arcs in the wide glazed chintz border. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. Some might want it laundered to even out the white background. This can be done but since others would prefer the unwashed feel, I have decided to leave it to the purchaser...

This is an elegant version of an Album Patch (aka Chimney Sweep) quilt done in a glorious grouping of fabrics from the second quarter of the 19th century. The binding is a hand loomed tape. The center is signed with the name Martha Harper. She was from Yardley, Pennsylvania; born in 1807. The fabric used for the diagonal sashing and border looks to be pieced but is actually one blue and brown printed material. The quilt is in excellent condition...

This strong Star Spangled Banner quilt is further emboldened by the use of solid color fabrics as well as the large size of the quilt. What is now a warm grey probably began as green. It has oxidized evenly and the color is very pleasing. The star motif is repeated in with LeMoyne stars in quilting. Sawtooth border is an excellent continuation of the triangles making up the stars. Unwashed condition. Measures 91" square; Ohio origin.

This lovely Irish Chain crib quilt is framed with the ultimate border. The stepped, curved applique creates a terrific positive/negative image. It is nicely quilted with an echo pattern in the white part of the border and a waffle pattern throughout the quilt. The squares of the Chain measure just 3/4" to a side. The quilt has been professionally laundered. Very close examination reveals three tiny, tiny darned spots on the border but no other condition apologies. Measurements are 28 1/2" x 40"...

This glazed chintz Wholecloth quilt is as crisp as the day it was made some 160 years ago. It was certainly packed away and did not see the light of day. The printed fabric consists of rows of floral bouquets. It is probably English. It is unusual that such an elegant front has a very plain cotton backing. It is quilted with chevron patterns throughout. The quilt measures 96" x 98". It is from the Plumer Humphreys Barton family, one of the first settlers of Newbury, Massachusetts...

This is one of the most dramatic examples of a Swirling Pinwheel (aka Rising Sun or Wheel of Life) quilt that I have seen. The use of solid red and green punctuated by orange centers gives it real drama. The rows of diamonds around the Pinwheels add to the pulsating quality. LeMoyne Stars are another fine element. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are some slight irregularities in the green which is probably a home dyed fabric and somewhat fugitive. It is quilted with diamond...

This Princess Feather (aka Prince's Feather) quilt has two particularly unusual features. The central motif as well as the centers of the feathers are all stuffed applique. Four hearts surround the very center motif. Yellow within the stuffed work appliques really makes them pop. The other especially distinctive feature is that the feathers terminate in unusual pointed shapes. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with a variety of patterns. Pennsylvania origin; circ...
