This four block Pots of Flowers quilt is over the top both in terms of design and execution. The flowers; leaves; stems and chain sashing are all heavily stuffed applique. Finely detailed embroidery outlines the applique. Exuberant does not begin to describe the dense design that is so full it has something of an abstract look. The quilt has similarities to the work of Baltimore quilt maker known as Designer Three. Her quilts, as well as this piece, are intense in design and padded applique...

This Classic Baltimore album quilt has all of the fine needlework that one expects to find in this most prized category of 19th century quilts. It is beautifully quilted with tiny stitches and graceful patterns that wraparound the appliqued blocks. The blocks are done with a combination of applique; reverse applique; embroidery and padded applique making for three dimensional blocks. The vine and flowers border beautifully carries through the applique in the body of the quilt...

Rarely does one find a broderie perse (chintz applique) crib size quilt and certainly not with the graceful and full design of this fine example. It is richly colored with the appearance of considerable depth to the garlands of flowers. The chintz cut outs are the same fabric often used by venerated quiltmaker Achsah Goodwin Wilkins (1775-1854)...

I can count on one hand the number of 19th century quilts I have seen with a matching crib quilt. Never have I seen as stunning a quilt with matching crib in such pristine condition. Both are in the spotless, unwashed condition as when they were made nearly 140 years ago.. The full size is quilted with concentric wreaths very similar to the appliqued pattern in addition to stylized flowers. The border is diagonal lines...

This extraordinary pictorial quilt depicts images that are both fierce and friendly. On the bottom are hounds chasing stags while on the top is a tree of life surrounded by birds, one of which may be a dove. It's a shame not to be able to speak with the quiltmaker to learn more of her intent but perhaps it is a metaphor for both the danger and kindness of life. Or am I reading too much into it? The quilt is from Pennsylvania; circa 1870's. Measurements are 77" x 78"...

This pieced Center Medallion quilt is an extraordinary sampler of fabrics and design. Each frame is filled with a huge selection of fabrics, most of which are printed. A variety of triangle shapes makes for variation but with consistency. The center Sixteen Patch block draws the eye to a pattern not seen elsewhere in the quilt. The red band is especially effective in emphasizing the structure of the multiple frames. Measurements are 78" x 89"; excellent condition...

This miniature hexagons quilt is quite astounding on several levels. It has the smallest hexagons I have seen. They measure about 3/4" to a side. The fabrics range from the 1830's to 1870's. The quilt is in mint, unwashed condition. Use of the red circles is terrific in creating a focus. Quilts such as this with thousand of pieces were often made in the late 19th century for competitions at fairs. I hope this got the blue ribbon it deserves! Measurements are 71" x 83".

There seems to be no end to the creativity shown by 19th century quiltmakers. This original example is centered with a basket of flowers surrounded by additional pots with birds and a variety of flowers. Some of the flowers are three dimensional made by the technique of ruching. The exuberant center is contained by a diamond inner border and finally by Nine Patch Checkerboard blocks. The maker was bold in her choice of fabrics as well as the appliqued designs...

Both the pattern and colors make this Sunburst quilt a really powerful design. I like to think that the center and corners choices of flowers warmed by the sun are a symbolic choice as well as good design. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. The body is quilted with postage stamp size squares and a cable pattern in the border. An identical quilt is in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum and is attributed to a member of Alverda H...

This unusual Album/Sampler quilt was made in the 1880's in the area of Rhinebeck, New York. The probable maker is Mary Mosher whose name is in the center block. Each of the blocks has an embroidered name. Extensive information is available about each of the individuals included on the quilt. In several instances, the block pattern corresponds with the person's vocation. Nelson Haver, for instance, was a banker and real estate broker. His block depicts a bank. Alonzo Mosher raised horses and hi...

This is an early and unusual quilt combining LeMoyne Stars and Tulip patterns. It is made with a wonderful array of early 19th century fabrics. The tan sashing was the perfect color choice to blend with the blues; browns and pinks of the quilt. Written in one of the pink tulip blocks is the inked signature of C.E. Cronkite who may have been the maker. Opposing top and bottom corners are variations of the primary stars. Measurements are 75" x 88". A tag sewn to the back indicates it was probab...

This wonderful floral album quilt is a combination of traditional and original appliqued blocks. Many of the original ones are done with reverse applique and look very much like the scherenschnitte paper cutouts popular with Pennsylvania Germans. Each of the four corners has a variation of a wreath pattern giving cohesion to the composition. The swag and tassel border beautifully frames the light and graceful applique blocks. Unlike many album quilts, the components of this are equal in weight a...

Starbursts are just the beginning of patterning of this exciting quilt. Diamonds are filled with Robbing Peter to Pay Paul type circles that look quite different when used in half around the border. Red centers are strategically placed within the stars. The blue and ivory border chintz beautifully complements the printed fabrics of the interior. Tremendous care and planning to maske this a superb quilt. Measurements are 80@ x 88@. Pennsylvania origin> circa 1850.

Long before the hazards of smoking became known, tobacco companies offered premiums included with the purchase of cigars and cigarettes. They were often flannel panels with the flags of different countries. The flannels were generally used in one of two ways. The premium was given away by the tobacco company in exchange for coupons that were redeemed for gifts offered in catalogs that were distributed by the tobacco companies. Coupons were gathered and saved until the consumer had enough to sen...

This unusual piece combines several patterns in a center medallion format rarely seen in mid West Amish quilts. The center LeMoyne Star is surrounded by blocks of Bow Ties and Chinese Coins that are irregularly set. The maker of this quilt had both imagination and skill. It is well pieced and quilted with several different patterns. The quilt is all cotton fabrics; circa 1920. It is in mint, unwashed condition. Measurements are 68" x 80".

This Mennonite Windmill Blades Log Cabin quilt (aka Pineapple Log Cabin) is one of the finest I have had the pleasure to own. It is made of wool challis with deep, rich colors and five borders that repeat fabrics within the quilt. The logs are a mere 1/4" in width. Corner blocks of diagonal stripes are the ultimate finishing point. Measurements are 72" x 83". Annville, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870. Excellent condition.

Some would call this pattern Mariner's Compass. I prefer Rising Suns, particularly with the warm orange centers. Never before have I seen an example so tiny and finely crafted. Each ray is but a tiny sliver. The combination of the Suns with budding flowers appears to be an original combination. Setting it on an indigo ground makes it especially striking and unusual. It is quilted with three geometric patterns. The indigo half blocks are done with a chevron pattern; straight lines on the whole i...

This Victorian Courthouse Steps Log Cabin is more elegant and "dressier" than most quilts. It is made of silks and satins. The logs are a wonderful small scale with a great use of light and dark. The richly colored Princess Feather quilt is a color choice with this pattern seen several times only in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Variations exist in the center motifs but the four block Princess Feather on a rich blue ground with red and orange is a combination found only in Lancaster. This stunning Mariner's Compass crib quilt is unlike any other I've seen in terms of color palette as well as design. The central Compass is framed with quarter Compasses and a triangle border. It is professionally mounted on a stretcher that is wired to be hung either horizontally or vertically. The green is more vibrant than appears on my monitor. If you would like to se...

Alphabet quilts are rare and in this eye popping color scheme, even more so. A white pattern on a colored ground is the reverse of what one would usually find in any quilt pattern. The stars used for corner blocks add additional "pop". The quilt measures 68" x 80". It is quilted with concentric circles over each letter and straight lines between. Excellent condition. Franklin County, Pennsylvania origin.

Mariner's Compass is one of the most difficult patterns to execute. This example is particularly finely done. Unwashed condition shows several light smudges that could be removed with laundering but in my opinion, not worth losing that never washed feel. Has one old appliqued, inconspicuous mend visible in thumbnail photo. Beautifully quilted. Measures 88" square; circa 1860.

This charming Sampler Quilt is appliqued with many of the elements the maker likely saw on her farm. In addition to a horse; cow; rooster; cat; vegetables; flowers and birds it has the most unusual feature of a hand saw! There are also some unidentified appliques. It is difficult to know whether they were meant as abstract shapes or, more likely, had meaning to the maker. The initials A.S are appliqued but unfortunately, not an entire name. The quilt is from Kimberton, Pennsylvania. It is in exc...
