Great size to hang vertically in a stairwell or horizontally over a sofa or fireplace. Cotton sateen backing; both tied and quilted. Pristine condition; circa 1920. Pennsylvania origin.

I am taking the liberty of naming this unusual pattern as Feathered Pinwheels. The four blocks in the center are a traditional Pinwheel but the addition of triangles around it create something new. Placement of the triangles creates an overall diamond pattern in addition. The quilt is made of a small white on blue print. It is very nicely quilted with feathers throughout. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 32" x 34"...

This is a classic Fans pattern, well made in nearly all solid color wools. Unusual background color of slate blue/gray. (The photos show the colors as more blue than in reality.) Pink and green embroidery offset the primarily dark colors of the quilt. Cable quilting in the border further adds to the overall depth of the pattern. Very slight fading throughout the border with one area of subtle discoloration visible in overall photo. Circa 1890; Pennsylvania Mennonite. Measures 68" square.

Wonderful tiny scale to each block of this Maple Leaf crib comforter. Beautiful variety of early fabrics. Tied, rather than quilted. Fabrics are in excellent condition. Has not been washed and has a subtle dark spot visible in photos along the bottom. Measures 39" x 55". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870.

This quilt most closely known as Shoo Fly (aka Alamanizer) is an unusual combination of elegant and country. The basic quilting; medium thick batting and plaid ground give it a very country feel. At the same time, there is a blue glazed cotton used throughout that is most often seen in far "dressier" pieces. The maker evidently had an eye for detail as in the lower right block, she pieced the same blue striped fabric in four different designs. The quilt measures 82" x 88"...

Many features make this a very well executed version of a Double Nine Patch pattern. The blocks are postage stamp size. Each piece of the Nine Patch measures barely one inch. It is very nicely quilted with a variety of patterns. The colors are well placed with reds consistently making up the center. In addition to the Double Nine Patch pattern, it is laid out so that one gets a diagonal chain effect as well. Has been professionally washed. Measures 78" x 92"; Maryland origin; $695.

This elegant embroidered mat may have been for a wall or a table. Remnants of tape on the top lead me to believe it had been hung. The embroidery is silk on very fine cotton or linen. Measurements are 7" square. The break in the tape mentioned above is the only condition apology. American origin; circa 1800.

This classic Straight Furrows Log Cabin quilt is made with a beautiful combination of light weight wools. The solid red and variety of blues are especially effective in creating the diagonal light and dark. Some of the small centers are made of more than one piece, giving a nice quirky touch. The quilt is in excellent condition. There are two tiny holes in one of the red logs but no other condition flaws. The backing is also a fine wool...

Very fine Straight Furrows Log Cabin Doll quilt from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Wonderful scale; machine quilted. Interesting construction of border with one strip of the dark fabric used as a straight border and a wider one with a ruffle. Green areas consist of 7 different calico prints; pink is one calico and one solid. Mended area on outer border about the size of a quarter is shown in thumbnail photo. Crudely repaired but could be re-done by one with nimble fingers...

Privy pocket that is extraordinary in several ways. Most wonderful are the graphics; the Irish Chain is set to create striking diamond and X patterns. This is the only privy pocket I have seen that is quilted; usually they are simply pieced like a quilt top. This is also earlier than other with which I am familiar; dates circa 1860. Hanging tabs; binding and one edge show some wear but the body of the piece is in very good condition.Measures 21" square; Pennsylvania origin.

This Nine Patch quilt actually forms two additional patterns. Triangles in the corners of the off blocks create Octagons and the joining of the peach triangles on diagonals creates an Hourglass pattern as well. The quilt is a beautiful shade of peach, not often seen. It is softer in color than appears on my monitor. It is nicely quilted with diamonds in the white octagons and diagonal lines in the triple border...

Variable Stars quilt done on a double pink ground. The stars are done with a nice selection of printed fabrics and a pleasing scale. Each block is 4 1/2" in diameter. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. Backing is plain muslin. Quilted with chevrons in the border and intersecting diagonal lines in the body of the quilt. Measurements are 66" x 84". Walkersville, Maryland origin (Frederick County); Circa 1890

It's difficult to imagine a more charming doll quilt than this delightful Bowtie. The contrast of dark and light makes for a strong graphic. The maker was clearly proud to quilt it on a sewing machine as she used white thread to highlight the stitching. The concentric chevrons quilted in the border are a nice decorative touch. The interior is quilted with squares. The quilt measures 14 1/4" x 14 1/2". The front is in pristine condition...

This painted pot of flowers was probably intended as a decorative table mat. It measures 9 1/4" long x 8 5/8" wide and is professionally mounted on a stretcher that is 11 1/4" x 12". It is signed on the bottom Irena Foater who was probably the proud maker but might also have been the recipient. There is a small right angle tear in the central flower that shows in the thumbnail. There are no other condition issues...

Variation of a Twenty Five Patch Quilt that also goes by the name of Mrs. Hoover's Colonial Quilt or more traditionally, Irish Chain. The Four Patches created between the main blocks make it more than the usual usual Irish Chain. Very finely quilted. Has one small pink spot (that I have not tried to remove) but otherwise excellent condition. Measures 86" x 98"; circa 1920.

Streamlined, perhaps original pattern that I have termed Bricks, for want of a more proper name. Wonderfully abstract in its simplicity. Nicely quilted including concentric half circles in the border that are a terrific contrast to the geometry of the rest of the quilting as well as the pieced pattern. Measures 40" x 55"; excellent condition. Maryland origin.
