Glorious is the best way to describe this Lone Star quilt with chintz border and applique (broderie perse). The colors are as vibrant as the day it was made in the 1830's. It is finely stipple quilted with diagonal lines. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. The chintz retains its original glaze. There were a very few nicks in the chintz border. Rather than risk any additional, I had very fine netting sewn over the border to stabilize it...

This unique Rooster quilt is truly something to crow about. It is made entirely of 1 inch squares. The background is cotton; the rooster's body is primarily velvet with some wool. In addition to being quilted, the rooster's body is also tied which I believe is meant to give the effect of feathers. The forty five star flag dates the quilt to the time period between 1896 and 1908...

This is the upper part of a kamishimo; samurai's formal attire without the trousers. It was worn over a kosode (kimono with small sleeves) with trousers. The texture is hemp like; coarse, slightly translucent, thick threads (thicker than other kamishimo). The family crest is the feathers of a hawk. Kami-shimo (upper-lower) that we currently have are quite dandy and fashionable. The amazing thing is the work that is involved when making these fabrics...

Some would call this pattern Mariner's Compass. I prefer Rising Suns, particularly with the warm orange centers. Never before have I seen an example so tiny and finely crafted. Each ray is but a tiny sliver. The combination of the Suns with budding flowers appears to be an original combination. Setting it on an indigo ground makes it especially striking and unusual. It is quilted with three geometric patterns...

This Princess Feather quilt (aka Prince's Feather) is the ultimate in Pennsylvania Dutch decoration. Both the fabrics and applique make for a rich, full pattern. The wreath center is different, yet very reminiscent of the Princess Feather design. Similarly, the star centers are closely related. The zig zag border inside the leaves; flowers and grapes or berries adds to the intense decoration. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition...

An exceedingly rare beaded purse with multicolored glass beads on a leather base, and with beaded and wood toggle closures. This early purse might be unique because of its age and that the date is actually worked into the decoration as part of the phrase "Gift of a Friend 1632". The interior of the purse is of a very soft, fine leather, probably deerskin or lambskin.

Especially considering its age the purse is in excellent and exceptional condition, with all the beadwork present...

This wonderfully graphic Mennonite Tumbling Blocks quilt (aka Baby Blocks) is made of fine, light wool fabrics from the late 19th century. The colors are deep and rich - perhaps a tad lighter than on the screen. The corners are quilted with the medallion wreath patterns often seen in Lancaster County Amish quilts...

Several features elevate this One Patch Quilt pattern far beyond the basic pattern that it is. Subtle variation in the use of printed red fabrics add an effective shading. Abutting the blocks gives a nice positive/negative effect and finally, the strong zig zag border frames it all beautifully. The quilt is in excellent condition and nicely quilted. The white blocks alternate two different leaf patterns. Measurements are 68" x 72"; excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1860.

Superb and rare antique needlework pocket on canvas, probably Pennsylvania Dutch, dated 1852. 18th and 19th century pockets took the place of purses; they tied at the waist under skirts and aprons and held anything from keys to money to sewing supplies. The contents were accessed by a vertical slit at the front. This is an amazing piece of folk art: the cross stitch motifs include a stag lying beneath a tree, hearts, flowers initials, and a dog. The header, back and lining are plain linen. ...

This crib quilt with groups of four Lemoyne Stars goes by either the name Four Stars Patchwork or Diamonds in the Corners. Setting the stars on point gives a nice swirling movement to the pattern. The quilt measures 32 1/2 inches square. It is in pristine, unwashed condition with the pencil marks still visible. It is quilted with diagonal lines. Pennsylvania origin; made circa 1880's.
