Straight Furrows Log Cabin pattern quilt; Circa 1890. The variety of black fabrics give this pattern exceptional depth. Mostly wools with some cottons. Pennsylvania Mennonite origin with pieced bars on the back. Colors shown here are more nearly true in close-ups. The black areas are comprised of the same size log cabin strips (not easily illustrated here) as the colored fabrics. 82" x 96"

This is both the earliest and largest Tumbling Blocks quilt that I have seen. It measures an enormous 102" x 116"; generous for a king size bed or a fabulous wall hanging for a loft space. This pattern is always dramatic but the scale of this makes it unusually so. Well quilted; hand loomed Trenton tape binding. Front is in excellent condition. There is one dark spot about the size of a dime that is visible in first thumbnail close-up. Staining on the back does not come through to the front...

This beautiful Sawtooth quilt also goes by the name of Birds in the Air. A large triangle is surrounded by smaller ones in a well combined group of three printed fabrics. The light yellow contrasting with the stronger red gives the fluttering appearance of birds in flight. The quilt is in outstanding, unwashed condition. The white triangles are quilted with half wreaths and leaves. It is very finely pieced with a tiny binding of the back turned over to the front. Measurements are 90" x 92"...

This is a rather elegant version of an Evening Stars quilt. It has a glazed chintz border with pea fowls throughout. The stars are beautiful grouping of brown printed fabrics with reddish brown in each corner. The back of the quilt is a pieced Bars pattern. It is from Ephrata, Pennsylvania (Lancaster County); circa 1850. Measurements are 92" square; excellent, unwashed condition.

This French toile de jouy fabric was undoubtedly made for the American market as it depicts the Mohicans at the Waterfall. The front of the quilt is cotton and the back appears to be linen. The front is in excellent condition. There are some holes on the back that seem to be where the quilt was caught in the bedsprings. The fabric is richly colored shades of red and pink. It does not have any of the brownish tones that show on my monitor. Measurements are 93" x 98".

The chintz border makes this Irish Chain quilt more elegant than most. In addition, the fine quilting depicts different floral patterns in the white blocks. Measurements are 102" x 104"; Pennsylvania origin; circa 1830. The sole condition flaw is a stain primarily on the back of one corner. Only with close examination does it show on the front as the brown blends in with the colors of the printed chintz.

This delicate Rising Sun quilt is beautifully combined with four part appliques. The Suns are 6 1/2 inches in diameter, made with a fine variety of printed fabrics from the second quarter of the 19th century. The construction is interesting in that each Sun in placed within a diamond shaped block with one lobe of the applique in each corner. The quilt has been professionally laundered. Upon very close examination, one can see small darned and weak areas to the red applique...

Classic Nine Patch quilt made most unusual by a dramatic stepped border. Beautiful 1870's fabrics. Small scale blocks; each Nine Patch is 3 1/2" square. Several light brown spots due to the unwashed condition. Strong enough to be laundered but not essential. Measures 74" x 88"; Pennsylvania origin.

This Baskets Quilt has so much going on that it is difficult to know how to name it. An appliqued flower comes out of each basket. It has a triple diagonal sashing intersecting with Nine Patch blocks. Repeated use of the green calico on the base of the baskets; handles and flower stems makes a nice balance to the strong use of solid red. Stems of the flowers are finely embroidered. The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. It measures 88 inches square...

Richly colored Wild Goose Chase quilt (aka Geese in Flight) from the early 19th century. Abutting the triangles gives a terrific up and down movement to the "geese". Streak of Lightning border was meant to indicate the end for the head. Clamshell quilting in outer border; diagonal lines and stylized flowers in the triangles. Excellent condition; probably New England origin. Measures 100" x 104"; cotton front with probably homespun linen back...

This bold barn raising log cabin quilt beautifully combines patterned wool fabrics to create added interest to the eye. The use of light fabrics in the center diamond draws your eye immediately to this focal point while the many additional prints lead you throughout the entire pattern. The four triangles of color within the red frame are particularly well placed. Upon close examination, one sees that the border is actually a herringbone pattern combining solid blacks with printed fabrics. Measur...

This is an absolutely stunning Windmill Blades (aka Pineapple) Log Cabin quilt done in wool challis with a cotton backing. The solid red centers are great focal points for the whirling log cabin blocks. The use of printed fabrics alternating with the solid brown and black also add impact. The unusual border is made of triangles created from strips similar to those in the body of the quilt. It is in immaculate condition. Measurements are 80" x 94"; York County, Pennsylvania origin.
