This velvet Tumbling Blocks quilt is as lush and sensuous as a sable coat - but more politically correct. Rich, dense colors combined with the depth of the fabric make this an exceptional example of an always desirable pattern. Wonderfully three dimensional. Tied on the back which is cafe au lait colored cotton sateen that also forms the binding. Albany, New York origin. Measures 67" x 78"; circa 1880.

This is an extraordinary, bold and original interpretation of a Honeycomb, or Hexagon pattern quilt. Graceful wreaths and vining borders are brilliantly offset against the dominant central pattern. Illustrated in The Quilt Engagement Calendar when I last owned it: I have recently re-purchased it from a collection. Very well pieced and appliqued. Finely cross hatch quilted. Unwashed condition; several area of light discoloration are visible in thumbnail photos...

This Four Baskets pattern was immortalized some twenty years ago when it was used as a United States postage stamp. The placement of color in this example makes it even more interesting than most. The use of two colors gives both the original block of two red (it "reads" pink but the material is actually a soft brick color with a white print) and two green baskets. One can see equally prominently a block of four red and four green baskets...

Turkey Tracks combined with an unusual appliqued pattern. The alternating blocks are an excellent combination of curvilinear and angular shapes. Included in the Chester County, Pennsylvania Quilt Documentation project. Professionally laundered; measures 82" x 86"; circa 1870.

It is difficult to imagine that a quilt as fresh and crisp in condition as this Nine Patch is more than 125 years old. It was obviously packed away and never saw the light of day. Beautiful fabrics; wonderful zigzag border makes a great frame. Quilting in off blocks done in the same nine patch design as the primary pattern. Border quilted with diagonal lines. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin; measures 76" x 90".

Streamlined, perhaps original pattern that I have termed Bricks, for want of a more proper name. Wonderfully abstract in its simplicity. Nicely quilted including concentric half circles in the border that are a terrific contrast to the geometry of the rest of the quilting as well as the pieced pattern. Measures 40" x 55"; excellent condition. Maryland origin.

This unusual quilt is closest to the Dove in the Window or Goose Tracks patterns. Well made with a terrific, whimsical swag border. The soft blue calico background beautifully sets off the pink and green. Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Measures 82" x 88"; circa 1860. Pennsylvania origin.

Dramatic Lone Star quilt (aka Star of Bethlehem) with the most unusual of background fabrics. It's a print I've never seen before that has the profile of a woman. It may be earlier than the calicoes of the star. Unwashed condition. Some oxidation to the solid orange fabric. Measures 100" square, unusually large for the 1870's when it was made. Pennsylvania origin.

Wonderful checkerboard type geometric pattern hooked rug. Great use of lights, darks and variegation. Beautiful shade of blue not often seen in such generous amounts in this type of rug. Measures 28" x 42 1/2": wool. Circa 1920 with an earlier checked cotton backing. Excellent condition.

Fabulous abstracted version of a House Hooked Rug. The entrance to the path looks like an upside down heart. Perhaps it was a sweethearts cottage? Great borders make the entire composition varied, unusual end eye catching. Professionally cleaned and restored on edges. Mounted on stretcher that measures 27" x 40". Primarily cotton with some wool. Circa 1900; Maryland origin.

Geometric quilt that comes closest in pattern to Corn and Beans or Fox and Geese. Placement of the blocks, as well as the use of fabrics, makes this soft toned quilt quite dazzling in patterning. There is actually not a secondary or background block. Both take on equal prominence. Shirting plaids and stripes are nicely complemented by the double blue and pink calico prints. Unwashed condition; one tiny brown spot visible in close-up photos. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1910.

Exuberant Baskets pattern quilt in the color combination so popular in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Well planned use of color; carrying through the border color to the top of the baskets gives each one a light feel. Diagonal grid with red blocks also adds unification as well as punchiness. Excellent condition. Measures 82" square; circa 1900.

Once again, it's stunning to realize that such a contemporary looking pattern and color combination can be more than 125 years old. This Hourglass (aka Bowtie) pattern quilt is made entirely with two beautiful printed fabrics. The tan background material is probably 10 years older (circa 1860) than the pink (circa 1870). Incredibly crisp, unwashed condition. Measures 84" x 88"; Pennsylvania origin.

Early and compex quilt pattern of Hexagons within Hexagons. Forms a secondary pattern of Six Point Stars around the basic hexagonal block. Beautiful fabrics; heart quilted within each small triangle. Chevrons quilted in large light triangles and cables in the red banding. Difficult to see because of the heavily patterned fabrics but well done. Excellent condition. Measures 85" x 94"; Pennsylvania origin. Circa 1860.

This Pinwheels pattern quilt is calm and serene, yet not boring. It is a sophisticated shade of dusty rose done in cotton sateen, giving it something of a "dressed up" feel. The matching pillow sham is a true rarity. It would serve for the purpose for which it was intended, but equally well as a matching dresser scarf or wall hanging. Professionally laundered; nicely quilted. Quilt measures 79" square; pillow sham is 31" x 78". Circa 1920.

Diagonal placement of the small size Baskets gives this quilt particular interest. Equally enhancing is the forest green background that is quilted in white. Nice variety of 1880's fabrics. Unwashed condition; well crafted. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin. Measures 79" square.
