This finely made Carolina Lily quilt is enhanced by the solid and sawtooth frames. The wide white border is an excellent showcase for the quilted feather with stars; leaves and flowers. The off blocks within the quilt alternate star and flower patterns similar to those in the border. It is interesting that rather than all of the flowers facing each other, the bottom row faces up giving a more graceful appearance to the entire composition. The quilt measures 91" x 98", ample for a king size bed...

This Birds in the Air Quilt is done with a lush combination of saturated colors. The red printed ground combined with the purple printed border are fabrics not often seen. They combine beautifully and work well with the prints of the small triangles. The maker included just enough pink to give a flutter to the flying birds. The scale of the quilt with just nine blocks filled with small triangles is unusual and very effective. The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition...

Nicely made One Patch quilt in which the pieces are set on point in groups of squares. The groups, made primarily of printed fabrics, are separated by solid white diamonds making a nice distinction between groups. It has a wonderful array of late 19th century fabrics. White binding is the backing turned over. Excellent condition; there is damage to one square. Measures 62" x 75". Maine origin; circa 1880.

This strong Star Spangled Banner quilt is further emboldened by the use of solid color fabrics as well as the large size of the quilt. What is now a warm grey probably began as green. It has oxidized evenly and the color is very pleasing. The star motif is repeated in with LeMoyne stars in quilting. Sawtooth border is an excellent continuation of the triangles making up the stars. Unwashed condition. Measures 91" square; Ohio origin.

Stunning crocheted and cut steel beaded purse, circa 1840. The work on this reticule is extremely fine, from the delicate crochet to the pattern of beadwork and dramatic 1 1/2” tassels. Excellent condition; some rust to beads. Measures 5” by 2 18”.

This Light and Dark wool challis Log Cabin quilt is done with unusually light tones. A note pinned to the quilt explains that the fabrics were from two dresses of the maker, Louisa Dreibelbis. One can only assume they were among her favorites. While the front of the quilt is entirely of fine wools, the backing is made of cotton pieced in a Bars pattern. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is a very small darned area in one corner where it may have gotten caught on something...

This antique Amish mat is hand braided and really nicely hand sewn. It is in near perfect condition with some minor surface abrasion. It is very tightly braided and to the touch it feels like it has some wool in the fabric. The colors are a green/blue, pink and purple. I lies perfectly flat on the table. 10" by 13" Late 19th C.

Exuberant Baskets pattern quilt in the color combination so popular in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Well planned use of color; carrying through the border color to the top of the baskets gives each one a light feel. Diagonal grid with red blocks also adds unification as well as punchiness. The name of this quilt pattern, Old Italian Block, is a mystery to me but it seems to be well established. This example is done with a glorious combination of stunning fabrics. All are in unwashed, pristine condition. The outer border is a highly glazed chintz. Oddly, the back is a cotton muslin. One would have expected a "dressier" choice given the front but perhaps the maker indulged all she could with the front of the quilt...

Wonderful handmade Berlin woolwork purse, from a small, but choice collection, English, circa 1850. Berlin woolwork eclipsed sampler-making and cross stitch from the 1830’s to the 1860’s, when thousands of hand painted patterns (mass-produced in Berlin), including many for purses, were available to English women . Berlin woolwork was worked on canvas in soft German wools, using mostly tent, half-cross, cross and pile stitching...

Pattern and size make this hired man's quilt most unusual. Very creative use solely of triangles to make a center medallion different from the outer frames. Fabrics date from mid through late 19th century. Summer weight (no batting). Measures 53" x 76", making it a very desirable size to hang either horizontally or vertically. Circa 1890.
