This Lancaster County Mennonite Baskets quilt is unusual for the small scale of the baskets. Each measures 4 inches tall and is filled with triangles. The off blocks are quilted with cross patterns and cable in the border. The handles are machine appliqued, as is often the case. Everything else is hand sewn. The small scale zigzag inner border is a wonderful complement to the baskets. The background color is a slightly dusty green. The same fabric is used for the entire backing...
This Delectable Mountains quilt is delectable not just for the name of the pattern. The choices of color and printed fabrics are equally delectable. The quilt has a wonderful zigzag border in a print very similar to the brown used in the body of the quilt. It is in pristine, unwashed condition.
New York State origin; circa 1850. Measurements are 83" x 92".
This Bear's Paw has the quilting and border treatments typical of many of Maryland's finest nineteenth century quilts. The double sawtooth border encases lovely vine quilting. A wreath within a wreath is quilted in each of the white blocks. Measures 94" x 96". Has been professionally laundered. Maryland origin; Circa 1870; $1650.
This bold Barnraising Log Cabin is made of wool challis from the 1870's. It reverses to a cotton calico One Patch. Dazzling use of stripes in the center. Some damage to the wools, much of which is visible in a close-up. It does not detract from the overall dramatic impact of the quilt. Measures 68" x 87"; Pennsylvania origin.
It is difficult to imagine that a quilt as fresh and crisp in condition as this Nine Patch is more than 125 years old. It was obviously packed away and never saw the light of day. Beautiful fabrics; wonderful zigzag border makes a great frame. Quilting in off blocks done in the same nine patch design as the primary pattern. Border quilted with diagonal lines. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin; measures 76" x 90".
To the best of my knowledge, this quilt pattern combining Black Eyed Susans with Barnraising is an original. The green has probably lightened with washing but the quilt remains vibrant and strong. The egg yolk yellow/ orange of the Barnraising perfectly continues the Black Eyed Susan theme.
Measurements are 67" x 80". Probably Southern origin; circa 1900.
The choice of fabrics makes this quilt an unusual combination of patterns. Rarely does one see all three sides of a Tumbling Block done in the same material. That, combined with the fact that the fabric is more subdued than the Stars, makes the cubes recede while the Stars are more dominant. The floral printed border combines leaves and vines in two colors in a very graceful design.
The quilt is in outstanding, probably unwashed condition. Measurements are 80" x 85"...
This unusual quilt is closest to the Dove in the Window or Goose Tracks patterns. Well made with a terrific, whimsical swag border. The soft blue calico background beautifully sets off the pink and green. Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Measures 82" x 88"; circa 1860. Pennsylvania origin.
Very vibrant version of a classic Pennsylvania pattern. This example was made in Lancaster County; circa 1880. Probably never washed.
Measures 80" x 82".
Navy and White Mill Wheel Crib Quilt with nice positive/negative effect. Circa 1890. Good condition. 29" x 32 1/2"
Deep and intense are the words that best describe the blue background color of this Irish Chain quilt. Unwashed condition; all solid colors. Orange binding adds a wonderful contrast to the dark brown border. Measures 66" x 79"; North Carolina origin. Circa 1880.
Thousand Pyramids doll quilt with a nice combination of soft brown tone printed fabrics. The floral border is a section of the fabric on the back that consists of rows of cherubs alternating with the flowers used on the front. The quilt measures 16 3/4" x 18". It is in excellent condition with the only apology being a nick in the binding. Made circa 1870's.
This Star of Bethlehem crib quilt is a wonderful miniature of the classic starburst design. Whole and half stars perfectly surround the central star making a dense design. The fabrics are all strong and intact but there is some discoloration around the outer border. Measurements are 39 1/2" square. Lehigh County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870.
This Cockscomb and Currants (aka Grapes and Oak Leaf) applique quilt is done with very fine stitching. The quilting depicts patterns of ferns and a variety of leaves. The applique border beautifully repeats the arms of the primary blocks to create a graceful frame.
The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. It is believed to have been made by Miss Effie Kinder in Jackson, Missouri; circa 1870. Measurements are 74" x 96".
Dramatic version of a Log Cabin Straight Furrows pattern done primarily in wool challis with a few logs in silk. Beautiful fabrics on the front as well as the back which is also pieced. Excellent condition. Circa 1870; Pennsylvania origin. Measures 80" x 90".
This Windmill Blades Log Cabin quilt (aka Pineapple Log Cabin) is a very fine Victorian example. The logs are very narrow measuring just 1/4 of an inch. This creates many contrasting light and dark blocks and the swirling effect one expects in the Windmill pattern. The body of the quilt is made of silks and satins with a blue velvet border.
There is slight damage to the dark silks near the center where the quilt has been folded for a long time...
This Thousand Pyramids or Triangles quilt is made in an unusual way. Most reversible quilts are two independent tops that are quilted together. In this example, the triangles on the front and back are sewn together, making the same pattern on either side. Made primarily of wool with some cotton flannel. Interesting quilting pattern in the border. Circa 1890; New Windsor, Maryland origin. Measures 76" x 86"
Rare fabric silhouette of a full body male. Done in silk and velvet on wool. Fabric of hat was cleverly chosen to resemble beaver. Initially, I thought this was a needle case but realized that it has no function other than the pleasure of it. Probably done about 1860 but a person more familiar with costume might say earlier. Professionally mounted on stretcher that measures 11" x 14".
