Signed Album Quilt combining traditional with whimsical blocks. At first glance, one does not recognize that it is laid out symmetrically with the same blocks in each corner and middle outer blocks. The center panel with appliqued hearts in hands and arrows has many inked signatures that include the names: John Boyer; Sarah Russell;Henry Pressel; Edgar P Newman; Mary A Proud George Carson and Rozanne Evans. This traditional Tree Everlasting quilt pattern is done in soft printed fabrics of the mid 19th century. Thousand Pyramids Quilt with a most unusual center of a printed panel depicting an elegant equestrienne with her hound. It is unusual for a highly pieced quilt to have a central panel. In this case, the elegance of the subject compared with the "country" aspect of the quilt makes for an even more unlikely, though successful, pairing. It is knotted, not quilted. Very good condition. This is one of the most dramatic examples of a Swirling Pinwheel (aka Rising Sun or Wheel of Life) quilt that I have seen. The use of solid red and green punctuated by orange centers gives it real drama. The rows of diamonds around the Pinwheels add to the pulsating quality. LeMoyne Stars are another fine element.
The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are some slight irregularities in the green which is probably a home dyed fabric and somewhat fugitive...
