This is an extraordinary, bold and original interpretation of a Honeycomb, or Hexagon pattern quilt. Graceful wreaths and vining borders are brilliantly offset against the dominant central pattern. Illustrated in The Quilt Engagement Calendar when I last owned it: I have recently re-purchased it from a collection. Very well pieced and appliqued. Finely cross hatch quilted. This Barnraising Log Cabin is most unusual because of the embroidered names throughout. They are done in a variety of handwritings. It is possible this was a fundraising quilt but more likely a friendship gift of some type. The date 1900 is embroidered on the border along with flowers and leaves. The border is nicely cable quilted with wreaths in the corners. The front is wool with a cotton backing. Pristine condition; measurements are 66" x 78"...

A vibrant kaleidoscopic background sets off this charming reclining dog hooked rug. The dog has whimsical yellow paws; ears and nose adding to his unique charm. The initials EG are probably those of the maker. Professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 30 1/2" x 40". Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin. Made of wool; excellent condition.

A three-color overshot coverlet with a pattern of snowballs and stripes on the dark ground side. The border on three sides is wavy lines and the fringe is a continuation of the white warp threads on the bottom and the red and blue weft threads on the sides. The warp is cotton and the weft is wool. The seam down the middle indicates that it was done on a narrow loom, though the sophisticated design and the three colors suggest that it was woven by a professional. Length without fringe approx....

This Diamond in a Square quilt is created with the use of One Patch blocks. It is an unusual variation from Bowmansville, a small town in Lancaster, Pennsylvania known for its Star pattern quilts made in this manner. The light and dark calico fabrics are very well planned to make this complex pattern. Solid color pinks in the light areas are especially effective in spreading the eye around. Measurements are 76" x 78". Cable quilting in outer red border...

Chimney Sweep Quilt that is much more dramatic than this pattern usually is due to the small scale of the blocks and the deep, inky blue fabric. Unwashed, excellent condition. Nicely quilted. Measures 78" square; Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

This charming Sampler Quilt is appliqued with many of the elements the maker likely saw on her farm. In addition to a horse; cow; rooster; cat; vegetables; flowers and birds it has the most unusual feature of a hand saw! There are also some unidentified appliques. It is difficult to know whether they were meant as abstract shapes or, more likely, had meaning to the maker. The initials A.S are appliqued but unfortunately, not an entire name. The quilt is from Kimberton, Pennsylvania...

This charming crib quilt is made with Nine Patch blocks that abut one another creating a Bars pattern. Between the rows of Nine Patches are four rows of fabric; three of which are different aspects of the same print. The quilt is in very good condition. The fabrics are all strong and intact. There is some very slight discoloration on the pink calico border. Measurements are 40" x 45 1/2". Oley, Pennsylvania (Berks County) origin; circa 1880.

Delectable Mountains is often a bold, dynamic pattern but in this case, even more so than most. The fabric is a very, very dark blue/ green that in limited light looks black. The use of solid color fabric makes it even stronger. The quilt has a wonderful diamond border. It came from an estate in North Carolina but with no background information. The use of some dark quilting thread leads me to believe it is of Southern origin. Condition is excellent. Measurements are 78" x 86".

The maker of this applique crib quilt combined several floral elements that do not grow together in nature. The central element is difficult to name but it is surrounded by crisscrossed tulips and has oak leaves in the border. Regardless of the liberties she took (or perhaps because of them), the maker created a wonderful composition. The strong center is filled out well with the tulips and the border with curved elements and oak leaves could not be more graceful...

This Eye of God quilt is an unusual pattern with an even more rare Greek Key border. The maker took great pains with the construction as the entire quilt is made of 1 1/2 inch squares. To clarify - rather than strips of fabric being used for the ground and colored areas, it is made totally with small squares. It's a strong pattern done in soft, entirely solid colors. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in pristine condition. Measurements are 76" x 88"...

These are barely worn leather shoes made in the second quarter of the 19th century. They have a label from Rodney's Manufacturer at 17 North Third Street in Philadelphia. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, shoemaking was one of Philadelphia's leading industries. In the 1850's, shoes began to be made shaped for left and right feet. Prior to that time, they were known as "straights" and by wearing them, they molded to each foot...
