This Mennonite quilt from Lancaster, Pennsylvania takes the traditional Oakleaf pattern to an entirely new level. The five Oakleaf blocks alternate with diamond blocks that create a continuous overall pattern when seen from afar. Double sawtooth borders create the effect of the Tree Everlasting pattern. Very fine Straight Furrows Log Cabin Doll quilt from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Wonderful scale; machine quilted. Interesting construction of border with one strip of the dark fabric used as a straight border and a wider one with a ruffle. Green areas consist of 7 different calico prints; pink is one calico and one solid. Mended area on outer border about the size of a quarter is shown in thumbnail photo. Crudely repaired but could be re-done by one with nimble fingers...

Straight Furrows Log Cabin pattern with two unusual features: the center of each log is divided on the diagonal adding intensity to the furrows; and the color scheme is out of the ordinary. The blacks and grays are not often seen in such predominance with the other colors chosen for this quilt. "Roman Cross", a pieced quilt, this is a remarkable example of a relatively early quilt, circa 1860-1880, the fabrics are documented classics of the period and remain strong and vibrant. There is one tiny professional repair and very minor muting of the fabric along the binding. The stitching is entirely by hand at seven stitches per inch and includes diagonal, parallel line quilting, thin batting. This finely made Carolina Lily quilt is enhanced by the solid and sawtooth frames. The wide white border is an excellent showcase for the quilted feather with stars; leaves and flowers. The off blocks within the quilt alternate star and flower patterns similar to those in the border. It is interesting that rather than all of the flowers facing each other, the bottom row faces up giving a more graceful appearance to the entire composition. The quilt measures 91" x 98", ample for a king size bed...

What a superb little early 19th century purse. It features fish scales and gold metallic thread embroidered on red velvet. The fish scales form the flowers and leaves of the design – the flowers have gold beads at their centers. Pretty scalloped gilt frame; white silk lining; gold bead looped edging. Good condition; there is some disintegration to scales. Measures 4” by 3 1/2”.
