This Birds in the Air quilt is made of a wide selection of printed fabrics that date from the mid 19th century to the 1880's. Placement of darks and lights gives a nice diagonal movement to the whole piece. The quilting is done in a pattern of concentric arcs. Condition is excellent; measurements are 66" x 82".

After much searching, I have not found a comparable pattern to this. It is closest to those known as Wandering Foot; Burr and Thistle or The Swallow. Unlike them, this quilt has a square center while the others have centers with a curved or concave square. Regardless of the name, this quilt is well made...

This comforter is like op art of the 19th century. The contrast of the red on black circles tied with white thread atop the rectangles make the pattern really move. The darks are wool suiting fabrics. Clearly, this was made for warmth as it is quite heavy, but it was done by someone with an artistic eye. Area of light discoloration visible in thumbnail but it does nothing to detract from the overall impact. Circa 1890; Pennsylvania origin. Measures 69" x 71".

This is what I call a down home or servicable antique pot holder. It looks like a odd apple with a tummy sash. It is sewn nicely but with a childish feeling to it. I am sure it was used but care was taken with it. The loop at the top looks original. It is a very nice naive pot holder from the 1840's. It is 4" by 5". I love seeing these hung.

Some damage to the wools, much of which is visible in a close-up. It does not detract from the overall dramatic impact of the quilt. Measures 68" x 87"; Pennsylvania origin.

This is an elegant version of an Album Patch (aka Chimney Sweep) quilt done in a glorious grouping of fabrics from the second quarter of the 19th century. The binding is a hand loomed tape. The center is signed with the name Martha Harper. She was from Yardley, Pennsylvania; born in 1807. The fabric used for the diagonal sashing and border looks to be pieced but is actually one blue and brown printed material. The quilt is in excellent condition...
