This Economy Patch doll quilt is made with a wonderful variety of fabrics dating from the 1830's to 1880's. It has a lovely distribution of lights and darks. It is in excellent condition with the small apology of one light diamond that may have been replaced at some point. It is professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 20 1/2" square. Pennsylvania origin.

This Economy Patch quilt has been packed away and is as fresh as the day it was made some 125 years ago. The solid and printed reds contrast wonderfully with the variety of multicolor fabrics. Three borders echoing the colors of the body of the quilt tie it all together. The overall palette is somewhat different than one usually sees making for a sophisticated looking country quilt. Measurements are 69" x 79"; Pennsylvania origin.

This lovely Floral Wreaths quilt has many traditional elements yet shows its own unique personality. The repetition of the flower in the center of the wreath is an unusual variation. Berries or grapes in the border with a leaf different from the interior is also somewhat out of the ordinary as is the sashing separating the blocks. One does not usually see that in applique quilts. It is very nicely quilted with diamonds throughout...

This Birds in the Air crib quilt is a finely made rendition of a pattern usually seen in full size. It is well quilted with a cable pattern running throughout the triple borders. It has been professionally laundered and is in pristine condition. Measurements are 39 1/2" x 41". Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's.

An early needle case in the shape of a shoe. It has a real contemporary look but is from the 1880's. Inside there are three pieces of wool to hold pins and needles. The lining of the shoe needle case is red wool and it does have some moth bits, please see pictures. The case is almost 3" tall and is 3" wide from the heel to the toe.

Rarely does one find a broderie perse (chintz applique) crib size quilt and certainly not with the graceful and full design of this fine example. It is richly colored with the appearance of considerable depth to the garlands of flowers. The chintz cut outs are the same fabric often used by venerated quiltmaker Achsah Goodwin Wilkins (1775-1854)...

Glorious is the best way to describe this Lone Star quilt with chintz border and applique (broderie perse). The colors are as vibrant as the day it was made in the 1830's. It is finely stipple quilted with diagonal lines. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. The chintz retains its original glaze. There were a very few nicks in the chintz border. Rather than risk any additional, I had very fine netting sewn over the border to stabilize it...

This Mennonite Windmill Blades Log Cabin quilt (aka Pineapple Log Cabin) is one of the finest I have had the pleasure to own. It is made of wool challis with deep, rich colors and five borders that repeat fabrics within the quilt. The logs are a mere 1/4" in width. Corner blocks of diagonal stripes are the ultimate finishing point. Measurements are 72" x 83". Annville, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870. Excellent condition.

This Light and Dark wool challis Log Cabin quilt is done with unusually light tones. A note pinned to the quilt explains that the fabrics were from two dresses of the maker, Louisa Dreibelbis. One can only assume they were among her favorites. While the front of the quilt is entirely of fine wools, the backing is made of cotton pieced in a Bars pattern. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is a very small darned area in one corner where it may have gotten caught on something...

This delightful Hole in the Barn Door (aka Shoo Fly) crib quilt is made with a very nice selection of printed fabrics on a double pink ground. The pink and green calico Bars pattern for the backing is proof positive of its Pennsylvania origin. Nicely quilted with diamonds patterning. Measurements are 33 1/2" x 38 1/2". Excellent condition; circa 1880.

This classic Barnraising Log Cabin quilt is done with an unusual color palette. Solid and printed oranges and browns are beautifully combined. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 82" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

This One Patch quilt made almost entirely of plaid cotton flannels is both simple and sophisticated. It took an artistic eye to put together this large combination of plaids in a palette of mauves, grays and browns. The four deep indigo squares are wool, also plaid. The backing is also a plaid flannel with striped flannel on either end.Measurements are 64" x 74". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1920.

This Thousand Pyramids is quilt perfection. It is finely pieced with a glorious array of mid 19th century fabrics. The double triangle appliqued border surrounds an undulating quilted vine. It is interesting that the border is machine appliqued. Rather than being done to save time, machine quilting in the late 1860's was often done to show off that one had a newfangled sewing machine. The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. Measurements are 92" x 94". Maryland origin; circa 1860's.

It is difficult to characterize this unique quilt. The Carpenter's Wheel center is surrounded by Flying Geese; King's Crown and Rolling Stone corner blocks. I'm not sure whether this is enough to characterize it as a strippy sampler quilt. The quilt was found in eastern Pennsylvania. It is imaginative and well made. It is in pristine, unwashed condition. Measurements are 68" x 76"; circa 1880.

This folky Sampler Quilt has a great combination of traditional and original blocks. Nothing could be more traditional than the center Schoolhouse done with nicely inked detail. Below it is a Bear's Paw signed "Fannie J. Gould March 24, 1892". While the top was certainly made in the 19th century, the backing is later. It seems to be from the 1950's. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 76" x 78"; New England origin.

The elongated Evening Stars makes a wonderful abstracted pattern. The rectangles formed by the joining of the arms of the stars creates a white diamond surrounded by indigo triangles that can become another pattern throughout the quilt. There are many stars but at the same time it is rather light and airy. White squares are quilted with stylized flowers. Measurements are 68" x 80". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

This comforter is made of cigar flannels from the early 20th century. The flannels were given as premiums wrapped around packages of cigarettes and small cigars. The largest flannel is the American flag in the center with slightly smaller flags of Mexico; Italy; Russia and Greece for the corner blocks. All of the other flannels are of Native American motifs. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is tied rather than quilted. The border is a light blue cotton sateen...

This wonderful floral album quilt is a combination of traditional and original appliqued blocks. Many of the original ones are done with reverse applique and look very much like the scherenschnitte paper cutouts popular with Pennsylvania Germans. Each of the four corners has a variation of a wreath pattern giving cohesion to the composition. The swag and tassel border beautifully frames the light and graceful applique blocks...
