One does not often find full size 19th century sampler quilts but those made in the 19th century are as scarce as hen's teeth. The nine blocks of this fine example are beautifully set off on a solid red ground. It is very well pieced. The border has a cable quilting pattern and double straight lines throughout the sashing. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There is a spot about the size of a pea on one of the bars of the Joseph's Coat block but nothing else to mention...

The needlework is exceptionally fine on this Broderie Perse chintz center medallion quilt. The applique is delicately stitched, although it is interesting to note that the maker took a slight shortcut by not precisely outlining the cut out of the chintz motifs. Other than that, she spared no effort. The quilting is of the the best quality. Stitches are tiny and abundant. It is filled with flowers; leaves; wreaths and pineapples in the corners...

It is not always clear as to how quilt names originated. In the case of the Carpenter's Square, one can see that the pattern relates to the use of geometric tools. The pattern was first used in the 19th century but is very contemporary in appearance. This example has five complex, overlapping blocks. The white off blocks are well quilted with feather patterns. The quilt measures 71" x 75". Made circa 1880; Pennsylvania origin; excellent condition.

This is a very interesting piece created by an early artist very skilled in needlework: an oval shaped map of England and Wales and small parts of Ireland, Scotland and France, the oval measuring approximately 19 1/2" by 17" (about 27" by 22 1/2" in the vintage gold frame). Judging from the seated figure of Britannia and the lettering and overall handling, I'd estimate this to date to the late 18th or early 19th century. Note the clipper ship near Britannia, as well as the early, quaint lette...

This is a very nice egg wash chintz brown calico bag with a tan linen lining. It has a ribbon trim across the top and around the edges of the bag. The edges only have a little of the ribbon trim left, it has worn off over the years. The bag is in really good shape and is not fragile, it could be really used. Or great to use to store items while hanging off a hook or peg rack. 10" by 13" not including the straps. Circa 1870-80
