This delicate Rising Sun quilt is beautifully combined with four part appliques. The Suns are 6 1/2 inches in diameter, made with a fine variety of printed fabrics from the second quarter of the 19th century. The construction is interesting in that each Sun in placed within a diamond shaped block with one lobe of the applique in each corner. The quilt has been professionally laundered. Upon very close examination, one can see small darned and weak areas to the red applique...

This Maple Leaf quilt (or is it a Peony?) is beautifully made and has an exceptional botanical border. The appliques on the border depict a variety of flowers and fruits that are stuffed and/or ruched. Never before have I seen one done this way. The sawtooth border is a good continuation of the geometry of the Maple Leaves. It is quilted with double squares on point. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition...

This French toile de jouy fabric was undoubtedly made for the American market as it depicts the Mohicans at the Waterfall. The front of the quilt is cotton and the back appears to be linen. The front is in excellent condition. There are some holes on the back that seem to be where the quilt was caught in the bedsprings. The fabric is richly colored shades of red and pink. It does not have any of the brownish tones that show on my monitor. Measurements are 93" x 98".

Straight Furrows Log Cabin pattern quilt; Circa 1890. The variety of black fabrics give this pattern exceptional depth. Mostly wools with some cottons. Pennsylvania Mennonite origin with pieced bars on the back. Colors shown here are more nearly true in close-ups. The black areas are comprised of the same size log cabin strips (not easily illustrated here) as the colored fabrics. 82" x 96"

Fabulous abstracted version of a House Hooked Rug. The entrance to the path looks like an upside down heart. Perhaps it was a sweethearts cottage? Primarily cotton with some wool. Circa 1900; Maryland origin.

Beautifully quilted version of a Caesar's Crown quilt. The diamond shapes of the border are repeated in each crown block, making for a nice interplay between the two. It is also interesting to note that the white off blocks create a secondary pattern of a four leaf clover. Professionally laundered and in excellent condition. Measures 86" x 90": Pennsylvania origin; circa 1860.

This pulsating starburst quilt is all the more amazing because it is what is known as a "Charm Quilt," which means no fabric is repeated. Many are similar but when closely examined, it is evident that they are not the same. The maker chose a wonderful group of fabrics including several dogs; birds and cats as well as George Washington...

This is both the earliest and largest Tumbling Blocks quilt that I have seen. It measures an enormous 102" x 116"; generous for a king size bed or a fabulous wall hanging for a loft space. This pattern is always dramatic but the scale of this makes it unusually so. Well quilted; hand loomed Trenton tape binding. Front is in excellent condition. There is one dark spot about the size of a dime that is visible in first thumbnail close-up. Staining on the back does not come through to the front...

Elegant Robbing Peter to Pay Paul quilt with glazed chintz border. Unwashed condition; one area of faint discoloration but essentially excellent condition. Several slightly different printed fabrics used for the lighter areas. Backing fabric, shown in last thumbnail photo, is most likely home dyed. Measures 82" x 108". Circa 1850; Pennsylvania origin. Illustrated in "The Quilt: A History and Celebration of an American Art Form" by Elise Schebler Roberts.

Stunning grouping of early 19th century fabrics used to make the triangles of this Thousand Pyramids quilt. Professionally laundered; pristine condition. Lovely soft tone tan chintz border of two different fabrics. Probably in the 19th century, this was quilt was likely made smaller. Only on the back does one see a seam next to two of the borders. This was exquisitely done and does not show at all on the front. Measures 92" square; circa 1850. Pennsylvania origin.

This is an elegant example of a Caesar's Crown quilt. It is extremely finely quilted with a feather border and floral motifs throughout. The teal blue/green and reddish/brown prints are "dressier" than many of the more traditional reds and greens. The sawtooth border in a lighter color sets it all off well. Some might want this washed but it is not imperative. The small spots could certainly be removed with a bath and the already dense quilting would appear even more prominent...

This touching Stars quilt has the most unusual addition of appliqued flowers giving a nice "pop" to the already bold pattern. The solid red used for the deep triangle border is another element that adds drama. It is well quilted with small clamshell patterns. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 84 inches square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's.

To the best of my knowledge, this Boots pattern quilt is a one of a kind. Because of the two colors, I am not certain whether they are meant to be boots or high button shoes, but in either case, it is a real rarity. There are 156 boots which gives it all a wonderful abstract quality as well. It is stitched with something of an echo pattern around the boots. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 60" x 74"...
