Long before the hazards of smoking became known, tobacco companies offered premiums included with the purchase of cigars and cigarettes. They were often flannel panels with the flags of different countries. The flannels were generally used in one of two ways. The premium was given away by the tobacco company in exchange for coupons that were redeemed for gifts offered in catalogs that were distributed by the tobacco companies...

This wonderful floral album quilt is a combination of traditional and original appliqued blocks. Many of the original ones are done with reverse applique and look very much like the scherenschnitte paper cutouts popular with Pennsylvania Germans. Each of the four corners has a variation of a wreath pattern giving cohesion to the composition. The swag and tassel border beautifully frames the light and graceful applique blocks...

The needlework is exceptionally fine on this Broderie Perse chintz center medallion quilt. The applique is delicately stitched, although it is interesting to note that the maker took a slight shortcut by not precisely outlining the cut out of the chintz motifs. Other than that, she spared no effort. The quilting is of the the best quality. Stitches are tiny and abundant. It is filled with flowers; leaves; wreaths and pineapples in the corners. The quilt has been professionally laundered and i...

Both the pattern and colors make this Sunburst quilt a really powerful design. I like to think that the center and corners choices of flowers warmed by the sun are a symbolic choice as well as good design. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. The body is quilted with postage stamp size squares and a cable pattern in the border. An identical quilt is in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum and is attributed to a member of Alverda H. Hoffman Herb family; Berk's county Pennsylv...

Nothing could be more of the moment than this patriotic flag quilt depicting Old Glory. It was most likely made either for the admission of Arizona into statehood on February 14, 1912 or during World War I which took place from 1914 - 1918. In either case, its timelessness remains. The quilt is beautifully executed with the stripes truly having the appearance of blowing in the wind. The flagpole is done with considerable detailing and the tassel wrapped around it is exceptional. Quilting is do...
