This is a Austrian rural style chest, a so called carved " Bauerntruhe " from Styria. Softwood ( pine needle wood ) This piece from about 1750 originaly was only to open from upwards. To make this nice piece more useable for everydays use, there recentely was made 2 doors into the front side of the chest. These 2 doors are not visible, when they are closed. Beautiful natural shell and bronze "Nautilus" lamp made by Tiffany Studios circa 1900. It features a polished iridescent nautilus shell sitting atop a patinated bronze base. The base is stamped Tiffany Studios, New York and numbered 634. This lamp has been in the same family for the last 75 years, and is in perfect original condition. It measures approximately 13" tall.

Spoils of Time
An unusual and dramatic firescreen abattant. It reminds me of some of the smaller, New York classical parlor furniture I've seen in Southern house tours with late Federal drawing and music rooms furnished with pieces imported by successful merchants - almost, but not quite, over the top in their design yet direct in their function. So an argument could be made for high, New York city style. And the inlaid oval in the center, with pie crimped edge, is reminiscent of some New England work...
