A SKILLFULLY CRAFTED COLONIAL AMERICAN SNUFF BOX. THE BOX IS CARVED FROM HORN AND THE BASE IS CAREFULLY INSET WOOD ALONG WITH THE TOP WOODEN OPENING CARVED IN THE FORM OF A RAPTOR. IT WAS MOST LIKELY HAND MADE IN NEW YORK OR THE SURROUNDING AREA BASED ON THE POPLAR WOOD TOP AND BASE. IT DATES APPROXIMATELY CA.1700 A.D.IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CARRIED IN A SIDE POCKET OF A JACKET WHICH EXPLAINS ITS RICH SMOOTH PATINA. IT MEASURES 3 3/4” IN HEIGHT BY 3 1/4’ IN WIDTH.

This is a pretty Italian military box made from solid beech during the second half of the 18th century. This type of box was often given as a gift to celebrate the graduation of cavalry cadets. The box is decorated with hand painting patterns depicting hearts and foliage surrounding the central medallion with a cavalryman and the inscription Anno 1775. Wear consistent with age and use. 33" wide 63.5" high. of unusual design with eglomise panel set in the bottom of of the mirror and plain at the top possibly lacking superstructure but probably not. An elegant mirror with classical detail carving and original back board, mirror plate and eglomise panel. I have never seen another mirror like this.
