There are two original labels underneath bearing the names Jakob and Josef Kohn, from Wien (Vienna). In 1904, Josef Hoffmann, one of the founders of the Wiener Werkstatte, designed a furniture line, noted for its simple forms, for the firm of Jakob & Josef Kohn, which actually manufactured the chair. I am offering this pretty much as an antique collectable frame (rabbet 15" by 11 1/2", about 17" by 13 1/2" if you were inclined to try to remove what looks like an inner frame). It probably dates to about 1880. For many years it has housed a chromolithograph of sailing craft, "Coming Into Port", by the American luminist marine artist George Curtis (1826-1881). The chromo is on canvas, bearing the stamp of publishers Colton, Zahm & Roberts of New York...
