This is a fine Japanese Imari bowl purchased a few years ago from a collection belonging to a San Francisco Museum. The inventory numbers on this de-accessioned piece can be seen on the underside of the bowl. The bowl is beautiful and has a wonderful fluted design. It measures 10 across and is just under 4 1/2 inches tall. Condition is excellent.

The head with engraved mouth and large eyes, the erect ears with incised details. A loop for suspension at the neck level.
Cats were the embodiment of Bastet, goddess of Bubastis and patroness of joy and women.

Rectangular mold for the confection of faience plaques of the Benu-bird or Phoenix.
The heron is depicted with a curled crest on the head. The legs are drawn up to the body and the feathers carefully indicated.
The Benu was associated with the sun, creation, and rebirth. The solar bird was thought to be a self-created being which had contributed to the making of the world.
The Greek historian Herodotus may have referred to the Benu as Phoenix.

Interesting anthropomorphic figure with the distinctive attributes of Egyptian shabtis: The hoe and a pot incised on the chest, the basket on the back suspended from a cord that runs around the neck.
The shabti is rendered mummiform, but without headdress. The facial features show a pinched nose with pricked nostrils and a small slit for the mouth. The vestigial apron of the overseer projects at the level of the thighs.

A well made 19th century Japanese porcelain haisen (sake up rinser on stem foot). Rare Shunga decoration depicting a bondage scene within the bowl. The manner of the painted decoration in comic fashion similar to that found on some shunga makimono. Shunga paintings and prints are rare enough but encountered. This is Noren with lotus flowers drawn in Tsutsugaki. Made and used in Kyoto during the Edo period. It has a few thin spots and small holes, but it's not noticeable. This is a Noren used in the summer, so it has a cool atmosphere. This is the Tsutsugaki line is very simple and elegant. The dyeing is hand-painted Yuzen in addition to Aizen.
