19th century (late Qing Dynasty - 1890s to 1911) unusual Chinese scholar’s rock in a form of a large natural amber nugget. The piece is true Baltic amber, large for amber as material, can be viewed from 2 sides, and conveys a very good feeling of a lonely mountain with its surface weathered by years of exposure to wind and water. Wonderful internal energy in the piece produced by combination of shape, texture and color of the material...

Delightful carving on a piece of 2-colored glass (transparent bottom and reddish top) with excellent rendition of its face and fluffy tail. Beautiful patina, pleasant to hold, overall in great shape, very nice piece for a scholar’s desk. Length 1 3/8 inches.

A Japanese white glazed studio porcelain model of a water buffalo. Hirado type though the eyes are not left unglazed to the biscuit as is typical. Holding sculpted form and details well, the biscuit base smooth to the touch and bearing an imprint from the fabric it sat upon. Except for a clean break to one horn, in otherwise good condiiton. A line of separation of the glaze under the buffalo's neck due to "crawling" in the kiln. Length, about 14 inches horn tip to tail...
19th century (can be much earlier) Chinese jade plaque carved on the front with a stylized twisting dragon and 2 heads of lingzhi fungus. Excellently carved in medium relief, its body incised with design of raised circles seen on Neolithic jades. Beautiful true jade with color ranging from light gray to brown to black, very clever use of the stone natural colors to accentuate the design...
19th century Chinese jade carving of a dragon turtle with bushy tail and its head turned to the left. The creature is one of the four Chinese directional animals - the Black Snake-Tortoise of the North. Late Qing Dynasty (pre 1911) Chinese jade thumb ring (also called archer’s ring because of its historic use in pulling the bowstring) of classic shape carved with bamboo stalk and branches and short inscription, all between keyfret borders. The bottom is crisply carved with four raised characters that can be translated as THE HALL WHERE KINDNESS is CULTIVATED, old dried red seal paste in the grooves. Very nice object for scholar’s desk...
An Asian wood cookie press. Folk art (Japanese or Korean - if Japanese would be considered "Mingei") utilitarian object. The "cookies", or treats, pressed from this mechanism could have been sweetened bean paste, possibly with rice starch, and not necessarily cooked. The iron nails slide along routing to enable the pressing action. Well used and in fair condition - exhibiting some distress by loss of wood on ends of the top board. A nicely decorative curiosity. Length, 9 7/8 inches
