This is a chess set made of faux ivory from the Belgian Congo. The board itself is also made of faux ivory, it measures 10 1/4" x 10 1/4" x 3/4". The pieces are in very good condition and measure from 1 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/2" on the smallest piece to 2 1/2" x 3/4" x 3/4" on the largest piece. Made around 1920 this great chess set is one of a kind!

Headdresses such as this, with a conical base supporting a round human head belonged to the Oglinye society, which was originally a warrior society. In present times, it retains only the idea that its members are strong and courageous. This piece displays the classic Idoma style, depicting the open mouth showing teeth.

African ibeji twin carved wooden figures, Yoruba people, Nigeria. Both with striated upswept coiffures and beaded embellishments. These are a pair with the same tatoos on their bellies, male and female.
Superb rich patina. The Yoruba figures on the market are normally never old. Here we have a set of twins, very old, likely from the 19th. century.
