The Lekanis remains in excellent, intact condition with only standard wear and minor chips that do not detract. The lid of the lekanis features palmette design with a lady of fashion and a banded design around the base. Both handles remain intact and the piece measures 9cm high x 18cm in diameter. The feature of this piece is the nice band of grapevines that surrounds the piece on both the inside and the outside. Greek Apulian Lekanis, Lady of Fashion - Ca. 350 B.C., from the ancient Greek colony of Apulia, in southern Italy. Terracotta lidded pottery vessel with footed base, dome-shaped lid and knob handle. Lid painted in red-figure style with series of two Lady of Fashion in profile and two palmette panels. The Lekanis was used in antiquity to store soaps and scented perfumes...

The vessel features a reel-shaped body with stepped foot and a flange. The doomed top with the head of Medusa at center. Medusa is rendered with a round face and curls ending in snake heads.
The pyxis is made in one piece and open at the bottom. The piece was not intended for concrete use and served as richly decorated burial object.
The surface shows remains of the original white engobe with gilded areas.
