An interesting large and heavy applique, likely from furniture in bronze, with 4 masks protruding, early Roman style ca. 1st.-2nd. century AD.

With two lion masks at the top and further down a pair of theatre masks also known in abbundance from the oil lamps. These four masks are graduately getting smaller with the first lion mask the largest.

Size: 11,3 cm. Weight: 113 grams.

An large and exceptional bronze oil lamp with handle in shape of a leaf and pyramid-shaped, pierced lid. Byzantine, 5th - 6th century A.D.

The lamp is finely engraved and well built. A substantial and very elegant bronze lap with beautifully patinated surfaces. Interestingly, an openwork lid was chosen for it in antiquity, perhaps since it became to hot with a closed tight lid, due to the large size and construction.

An ancient plate square in form, bronze with silverplating, Late Roman, ca. 4th. century AD.

Highly interesting square bronze plate with portraits of emperors and empresses from the Constantine period, 4th. century AD. Purpose unknown, but perhaps a sort of weight. The portraits are with a round coin-like border and with floral engravings in between.

Uncleaned with much adhired patina and would be much better if professionally cleaned.

The rim is decorated with facing Oceanus heads alternating with fishes. The finely rendered heads show bushy beards extending to both sides and goat-like ears. The lobster claws expected in the hair of Oceanus are mistakenly rendered as ram horns, the usual attribute for Zeus Ammon.

Herms were used as boundary markers on roads and borders. They were also placed outside houses to ward off harm or evil. In its amuletic form the herm was associated with fertility and good luck.
