Late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) small Chinese Canton enamel covered box for seal paste painted on the outside with polychrome enamels depicting a butterfly in flight among melons, gourds and morning glory flowers on vines with leaves. Wonderful quality painting with famille rose colors, gilding to all exposed metal parts (some wear). Very pleasant patina, great item for a scholar’s desk. Height 1 1/4 inches, diameter 2 3/4 inches.

Peony flowers and butterflies in flight around the base. Unusual and very lifelike composition with perfectly captured posture, wonderful potting, excellent expressive face, beautiful green and brown glazes.
