These ivory statues were carved around the late 19th century or early 20th century. The eight immortals are Chinese legendary figures. From left to right, they are: Lan Cai-He, Cao Guo-Jiu, Lu Dong-Bin, Li Tie-Guai, Zhang Guo-Lao, Han Xiang-Zi, Han Zhong-Li and He Xian-Gu. The walnut base is 18 inches long, 2 ½ inches wide and 1 ½ inches high. The figures are 4 ½ inches tall. They are in good condition except for two small repairs...

This early 20th century carved ivory Buddha statue (Japanese called Hotai) is 6 ¼ inches tall, 3 ¾ inches wide and 3 ¼ inches in depth. The whole statue was carved from one solid ivory tusk. The left hand of the Buddha is holding a small fan; his right hand is resting on his knee. He wears a twisted necklace and earrings and has a big smile on his face. This is not like a traditional Buddha image; it is more of an off center imagination from the artist...

Old Chinese ivory figure of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, in a refined and elegant pose. The body is made out of one piece elephant ivory and finish in a term "cold painted ivory" meaning that the color is applied without any firing to fix and harden it. This method of coloring ivory dates back to the Ming times and was particularly popular in the 18th century. This is probably 19th century piece. This late 19th century Chinese ivory carving of a Smiling Buddha (Hotai) is 2 ¼ inches tall, 2 inches wide and 1½ inches deep. His eyes are inlaid horn. His head is raised up in a big smile. His left hand holds a sack; prayer beads are in the other hand. There are six children around him. A hand is missing on one of the children. Aside from that, the piece is in pretty good condition.

This late 19th century Chinese ivory statue of a bearded scholar is 5 ½ inches tall and 3 inches wide at the widest part. His eyes are half closed; he holds a scroll gently against his cheek. There are two characters read as ¡°Da Ming¡± on the bottom. The inscription means ¡°Great Ming Dynasty¡± which is quite common on ivory carvings or porcelain. There are a few hair line cracks due to the age of the piece. Over all, it is in great condition.

This superb ivory carving is 12 inches tall (including base) and 3 inches wide. The statue presents a legendary Chinese character who is a member of the eight immortals. According to legend, one day he told his follower that his spirit was going to travel far away. He asked the young follower to watch his body for seven days while he was away.
