The wood is fully lacquered. The leaves and stems are lacquered in green sprinkled with discreet gold powder which gives subtle golden reflections...

Late Meiji (1910s) netsuke of a kneeling woman wearing kimono and using chopsticks to eat rice cakes from a small tray that she is holding. Something strange is going on with her hair - the tail end of it looks like a snake biting a ball, not sure about its meaning. Wonderful sense of volume, beautiful clean carving, very nice face, elegantly patterned robe. Signed WAKIN (alternative reading is Inuchika) on oval reserve on the back. Very beautiful finish to the surface. Height 1 7/8 inches.
