Antique 16th century Turkish Ottoman leather water flask (Matara) formed from the hind-quarters of an animal with stitching down the middle of the flask, one leg acting as the spout, the other shortened and stitched, acting as a small handle, retained its original wooden stopper. Carved from gray schist and retaining most of the neck, this head appears to have once been part of a larger relief carving. The back of the head was probably attached to a larger stone background and was later chiseled off. The hair is wavy and the lips are bow shaped. There are no apparent cracks or repairs to the stone, but the lower left ear shows some small loss.
