This Imari dish is 18 5/8 inches in diameter, probably with the original "tomobako" box dated "the third year of Ansei", 1857. The design is divided into three repeated sections with Karako boys. The enameling is of good quality, underglazed blue with gold in a lovely soft tone which can only be found on pieces as old as the Meiji period. Intricately carved hand wrought sterling silver bracelet designed and signed circa 1950 by Taxco, Mexico artist Hector Aguilar (1905-86). Bracelet measures 1 1/4" wide. Cranes cut on the frosted surface rise from ice blue, their necks curling out as handles as they preen. A quintessentially Japanese subject executed with impeccable Japanese craftsmanship. Beautiful example of the sterling silver and azur-malachite stone pin dress clip designed and signed (c.1931-46)by Taxco, Mexico artist William Spratling(1900-1967). Measuring 12 1/2", and finely cast in bronze, this figure represents a Faun or Satyr, one of the followers of Pan, and the original was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii in 1830. With good detail, and true to the original statue, this one has a dark patina, with verdigris visible around the head primarily, and some wear to the patina on the body. Of nineteenth century original, and most likely a Grand Tour souvenir.

I have never seen this type of Hina Goten (Palace) until I found this one. No longer a spring chicken myself, I asked several people in Japan if they knew anything about this style. No one knew.
