A gorgeous female Bunraku doll with mobile head and hands in the original wooden box. She is 30 inches long from hemline to hair ornament. She has a very adult looking face and extremely ornate hair dress. The kimono is of silk with a shibori obi. This doll likely dates to the 1960s or early 1970s. A rare find for the collector of Bunraku items and Japanese dolls.
Beautiful view of an old house in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. The design is finer in detail than shown in the pictures. All the designs are woven with silk thread and real gold wrapping thread. There is no need for extra spot light for this obi to shine (as shown here).
The composition of this obi is a “fukuro obi
A Stunning combination of works by mother and son Koyama Kiyoko (1936-present) and Koyama Kenichi (1961-1992), both in the original signed wooden boxes. The Tokkuri, by Kiyoko, is of bulbous form decorated with slips of green glaze used sparingly around the neck. The terracotta body is fired to a deep amber on one side, the bright orange clay indicative of Shigaraki showing through on the other...
Kamishimo has been the Samurai’s official attire in Edo period (1615-1868). It also
became the attire for performers of traditional music and dance, especially in Kabuki theatre during the latter part of the Edo. For rare occasions, it could still be made
for something traditional up to present time.
This Kamishimo is made out of hemp and is beautifully hand sewn. I am not quite
sure of the age and who this belonged to in the past...
I have never seen this type of Hina Goten (Palace) until I found this one. No longer a spring chicken myself, I asked several people in Japan if they knew anything about this style. No one knew. We may call this a rare find. The Hina ningyo (doll) set that I grew up with was displayed in the steps style, which is still a common way of displaying 15 dolls with furnitures as long as a space permits...
NEW BOOK: This is the most popular quarterly antique magazine published in Japan. It is from Gakken, Gakushu Kenkyu-sha. This is their the 25th edition, the latest edition, published in Feb 2002. I had a chance to purchase one of these series a year ago. Within a year I looked for others and purchased the next two books when they were available.
"Picture tells all" describes this book. You can enjoy this book without knowing the language. It shows the details in the pictures...
Schiaparelli's gold plated rope necklace and bracelet, each with a pendant resembling a slide. The crystal dangles are in jewel tones of opal, blue, red, green and gold and their transparency makes them shimmer as real jewels would. The earrings have the same jewel-tone dangles with the principle large crystal being ruby color. A lavish treat: rare to find a three piece set from the masterful Elsa Schiaparelli! Necklace is 13" with a 4" extension and is 3/8" thick...
An ancient Japanese scroll featuring a blue eyed neko-tora (cat-tiger) prowling over a boulder peering out through sheets of pouring rain. This is a very unusual subject; I have never before seen a tiger depicted with blue eyes. Due to 250 years of isolation the Edo period Japanese artists had never seen real tigers and were forced to conjure up these feline images from their own imaginations...
An awesome mid 19th century scroll depicting 2 highly detailed dragons battling in the clouds. The scene, signed Koun Teruhiro, is depicted in watercolor on 21 sheets of paper joined to form the canvas. Beside the signature is the words Hobun Utsushi, which means written in the style of Hobun...

Beautiful small simulated Baroque pearls give this Miriam Haskell necklace a dainty look. Flower clasp stamped Miriam Haskell. 27 1/2" end to end.
The black dye changed its color to a dark gray which is nice in its own way. It is a formal wear with 5 mon (family crest). Top half of the lining is done with a white silk and the bottom half is done with the same black silk from the front. The design from the front goes throughout the inside lining! The bottom is lightly padded which makes this kimono into a great decoration piece. Beautifully hand sewn, again it is the work of art itself. The design is done in Yuzen dye and in excell...
