Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu in characteristic seated pose of royal ease, sculpted in relief from a brown-gray igneous stone. Mid- to late-Edo Period ca. 1800. Very minor old surface loss. Variegated lichen accumulation and patches of dried moss.

Most spouts appear climbing over the edge of a basin, and thus only the front of the dragon need be cast. This however writhes across the edge of the basin, the entire body exposed. Eiraku Wazen was a twelfth generation ceramist. His father Hozen (1795-1854) was the first to use the name Eiraku. He was successful in mastering Chinese Ming dynasty porcelain techniques, especially Kinrande (a combination of underglaze blue and overglaze red and gold decoration), in vogue in Kyoto at that time...

A remarkable sake saucer made in the sometsuke (underglaze blue) style of porcelain by Eiraku Hozen (1795-1854).

Eiraku Hozen was an eleventh generation ceramist, the first to use the Eiraku name. He was successful in mastering Chinese Ming dynasty porcelain techniques, especially Kinrande, in vogue in Kyoto at that time. His son Wazen (1823-1896), whom he instructed, was a skillful calligrapher and painter.
