Large Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure (horse rider)

This unusual pottery figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) and would once have sat on the back of a large horse. It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a reddish-brown pottery. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of creamy-white on top of which have been applied black, red and pink pigments. Sacred wood carving mask dedicated to kami (god, divine spirit) handed down in Amami Islands (Kagoshima Prefecture), in such weathered condition as is (with paint-peelings as well). 19th century at least. Old Japanese distemper painting on paper as 'doro-e' (ref. https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/d/doroe.htm), Mid-late 19th century. 23.5 x 33.5cm (9.25 x 13.18in). Highlights of its characteristic feeling of such low and opaque texture. Aged deterioration as is.
