Extremely rare bronze Lobi 3 legged stool, in antelope form. Measures 10" high, 18" wide and 5 1/2" deep.. Lobi stools are always a lovely form, sometimes with figural designs, and bronze stools are very rare. Such examples were always made for a chief or other high ranking member of the community...

The rim decorated with geometric motifs, at the top a face representing Eshu, the messenger deity who acts as a medium between the human and the spirit world. H. 27,5 cm, W. 33 cm. The board has been well used and shows a good amount of wear and a great patina. Nigeria, first half 20th century. Provenance: Ursula Voorhuis, The Netherlands. She owned one of the biggest Yoruba collections in the world and did a lot of field research and collecting in the 60’s and 70’s.
