TWO CATS UNDER A TREE

Lovely cats hand-drawn in very unique and unusual style on silk by a great anonymous painter, mounted on original hanging scroll, Edo period (1603-1868), Japan, Total: approx. 44 x 171.5 cm (17.32 x 67.51 in), Picture: 34 x 87.7 cm (13.38 x 34.52 in), in such damaged but wabi-sabilly aged condition as is with worm holes and stains as seen. (Strings of makio and kakeo at the top hanging part were replaced in the later years.)

A set of shishi guardian carvings from high up on the front of a Buddhist temple, each cut from a single block of wood with fore-paws extended in a leaping motion and vicious snarls. Each is roughly 30 x 30 x 24 cm (12 x 12 x 9-1/2 cm tall and in overall excellent condition. These date from the Edo period.
Shishi guardians, also known as Komainu or "lion dogs," have a long history in Japanese art and culture; iconic figures often depicted in pairs and placed at the entrances of shrines...
