A ceramic cover for a tea room brazier in the shape of a devil dressed in priests robes dated and annotated within. Dating from the Ansei era, inside it is annotated by Daiko Sogen (1772-1860), 435th head of Daitokuji. Well known for his poetry and mastery of the Tea Ceremony, he taught Zen to Eiraku Hozen, and was compatriot to Gengensai. It is 34.5 x 34.5 x 30 cm (13-1/2 x 13-1/2 x 12 inches) and is in fine condition.

A modernist sculpture in bronze on a wooden base by pioneering female artist Katsura Yuki (also Yukiko 1913-1991). The humorous figure is reminiscent of the works of Okamoto Taro and Akutagawa Saori, another pioneering female artist from Japan who lived in New York around the same time as Yuki. An Edo period sumi-e painting stamped Shundo-no-in on very rough silk depicting Daruma heir Kensu Osho, an eccentric Chinese beggar-monk who lived on shrimp and clams. The painting is certainly no less eccentric than its subject, unique among paintings I have seen from the Edo era. It retains the original faded border of dragon dials and lucky symbols extended with beige and features bone rollers...

The design of this kimono is done in Kyoto Yuzen dye (famous paste resist dyeing method) and Bokashi (gradual shading). It is a formal wear with 5 mon (family crest). Top half of the lining is done with a beautiful red silk and the bottom half is done with the same black silk from the front...

A pimpled toad looks to the sky exhaling a clouded spirit, a truly superb version of this theme in deep caramel bronze dating from the Meiji period. It is an interesting theme, the ugly creature elevated to the status of saint. Judging by color and quality, we attribute this as the work of Kanaya Gorosaburo (1836-1890), a bronze artist of Kyoto fond of this color and known for his superb modeling and detail. Not always signed, Gorosabutro was often known to sign only the box...

A quintessential Taisho style painting of a boy in a mystical forest of flowers, pigment on silk by Hoson Reisui (b. 1897). The ethereal image seems not so much to be drawn on the silk, but to eminate from it. The boy too seems as if a sprite living in some fantastical reality. There is a minor water streak opposing on the bottom outside of both panels (near the signature) and some loss to the white gofun petals. Each panel is 34 x 59 inches (86.5 x 149.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition...

It is classified as "Tsugaru-kei", Tsugaru being the old name for this region, with a lesser classification of "Nuruyu," the hot spring area where many Aomori kokeshi artisans are located...

Gnarled plums cover the unusual rich blue ground of this antique tsubo vase from the Arita kilns dating from the early 20th century. It is 14-1/2 inches (37 cm) tall and in fine condition, signed on the base. The decoration is performed entirely in overglaze enamels with a gold rim,and is both vivid and fresh.
