Iron red shows through with startling effect like meteorites in a dark night sky of blue and brown. It measures 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall, the same diameter. A giant mingei carved mask of an oni (demon) embodying the indefinable sense of madness particular to Japanese Demon images. The face has a mysterious mixture of sadness and evil not duplicated in any other culture, a truly pitiable character. The mask, carved from a single block of wood, is just over 2 feet (66 cm) tall and in fine condition.

A quaint hand-carved image of Minogame (a sea turtle) supports this antique bamboo pipe tap dating from the second half of the 19th century, the rich dark wood highly polished from a century of fond handling glows like satin. The turtle is a symbol of longevity in Japan, and often is depicted in celebratory situations. Here the creature has been chiseled out of a solid chunk of wood, head raised over the top of its shell...

An incredible work of florals on gold signed on the base Kutani Kaburagi Sei showing the very best of that regions pottery dating from the Meiji to Taisho period, when quality and craftsmanship was at its peak. It is 9 inches (23 cm) diameter, 13 inches (33 c) tall and in overall fine condition. There is a small tori-ashi (birds foot) glaze crack in the bottom but does not leak, and is only visible on the outside bottom.

A furosaki tea room screen made of a very large hanga woodblock print in the fashion of Inui Tai mounted within a simple wooden frame and stamped in the lower left corner. An intriguing work, village roofs are visible over a sea of rice containing all manner of small country scenes...

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 4.25". This is an example of the "Yajiro-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan is Niiyama Manabu, who was born on October 13th, 1930 (Showa 5.) It is not dated, but was most likely made within the last 20 years. It is made in dusted silver, likely over a bronze body. The form is expertly crafted, incised with a fierce expression showing awe for the power of nature and its inhabitants. A fox sits wrapped up like the Daruma, a humorous image by long time head priest of Kenninji Temple Takeda Mokurai (1854-1930) in light ink on paper. The scroll has been fully remounted in dark forest border extended with beige and features black lacquered wooden rollers. It is 18 by 47-1/2 inches (45.5 x 120.5 cm) and in excellent condition. This Imari covered bowl, though matching our listings 1065543, 1065548 and 1065550 for form and decoration, is a little larger in size. In excellent condition, it is just out of a diplomatic estate. The bowl is about 4 7/8" (12.38cm) diameter and 2 5/8" (6.67cm) high. The cover is about 4 1/2" (11.43cm) diameter.

Plums blossom across 24 panels, harbinger of Spring and a cue to the scholars it is time to end the winter isolation and set out on journeys to old acquaintances. Ink and light color on paper dated 1913 with applied gold flake in a silk border decorated with gold designs enclosed in a black lacquer wooden frame. It retains the original backing paper.
