A rare yari-no-saya of course bristles blossoming tuft-like from a 7 inch black lacquered wooden sheath bound with strips of bamboo resting on a four legged hardwood stand. The Edo period piece is in excellent condition, with only minor damage to the wooden ring about the bottom of the tuft. It is made to take a spear head over 8 inches long.

A set of two gilded and lacquered wooden Imperial memorial tablets dating from the Taisho period (1911-1925) on elaborate 3 piece stands; one etched with the name of the Meiji Emperor, the other noting the current emperor (at that time). The mirror, one of the three Imperial signs, is represented floating in a sea of stylized clouds on the cornice cap, separated from the ornately carved plaque by a red and black lacquered slab...

Large Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) high-fired gray-black pottery bottle-form vase with geometric incised designs of unusually fine form. 11 1/2"H. Very good overall condition with minor wear. One thin old chip to the foot.

Large Chinese Jin Dynasty (1125-1234 AD) Honan brown glazed truncated meiping vase decorated with cut glaze concentric circular designs on the shoulders. Two strap handles flank both sides of the short neck. 11"H x 11 1/2" diameter. Very good overall condition. There are a few scattered small pit holes, which are original production imperfections (see enlargement 3). Some scratches in the glaze are evident as is typical for a piece of this age.

Old Japanese theater mask of "tengu" in a fierce grimace sporting a prominent proboscis. The "tengu" were mythical creatures, half-bird and half-man, who were tricksters living in pine trees in the forests. I am uncertain of the dating of this mask but estimate it was crafted in the early to mid-20th century. It may be older. It has signs of age and use. WEARABLE ART: When this coat was tailored out of an old Japanese kimono, it was made to stress the lightness of the coat without the lining. Light coconut shell buttons were chosen for the same reason. Freshly made using the fabric from early 1900 to 1940. Black color with a slight green tint and silver thread stripes, medium size.

Chinese Qing Dynasty solidly potted baluster-form vase decorated on the body with patterns of rosettes and vines incised into a thick, white glaze (with a faint ivory to grayish tint, depending upon the lighting). The neck features geometric and leaf patterns created with a combination of incised and relief techniques. Two finely detailed, moulded lion's mask handles are at each side of the shoulder. 12 1/2"H. 18th to early 19th century...

 

Kangxi Period (1662-1722) Chinese blue and white porcelain export covered jar decorated on one side with the "one hundred antiques" motif and on the opposite side with figures in a landscape. Auspicious symbols decorate the lid. The 4-character hallmark on the base appears to translate "record of beauty, benevolence and profit." 8 1/2"H and diameter. Finial replaced. Numerous old chips to the cover and base.

Chinese yellow crackle-glazed pear-form porcelain vase with an everted rim and an underglaze blue double-ring at the base. Dates from the 18th century. 9 1/4"H. There are small scattered green glaze spots and interesting irregularities of the glaze application at the neck. Fine quality restorations have been made to the neck which are not visible to the eye. The vase was acquired from a Southern Arizona estate.

Tall (17 1/4"H) Chinese transitional period wucai gu beaker vase decorated around the circumference in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome pigments and black outlined highlights with figures, phoenix birds and a crane in a garden setting. Three continuous vignettes are interspersed with flowers, rockery and clouds. The top rim features a "cracked ice" motif in underglaze blue within a decorative band. Excellent condition...

Large 17 1/2"H lidded jar finely painted in the Kangxi style in sapphire blue on a white porcelain ground. The decoration features a pheasant on a rocky outcropping surrounded by flowering plants which extend around the circumference of the vase and up to the neck, where a second bird perches on a flowering branch. A blue foo lion finial tops the domed cover. The base is encircled by a band of crested waves. The shoulder panel decoration features lotus flowers on a mosaic ground...

A very fine early 20th century screen hand-painted simply and exquisitely with the mixing branches of a blossoming cherry and both fresh green and red maple. The painstaking detail in each individual leaf and flower is breathtaking. The awesome scene is triple bordered inside a frame of green brocade, red and black silk and gold. We have had the screen re-backed with original style forest green paper and replaced the black wooden frame. It measures 31-1/2 by 66-1/2 inches (80 by 169 cm).

A colorful and impressive scroll featuring a bushy tailed neko-tora, or cat tiger from the late Edo period. The neko-tora is a by-product of the Japanese closed border policy, rigorously enforced during the Edo period, which eliminated outside trade and influence. Therefore, Japanese artists were forced to come up with their own ideas of what a fearsome tiger looked like based upon older paintings and skins...

Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-906) Changsha ware pale yellow glazed ewer decorated with light brown-splashed glaze over relief molded leaf-form foliage designs on opposing sides beneath each of two loops. 9 1/4"H. This particular shape first appeared in China in the 8th century and was used for hot water. Very good overall condition. A few small glaze losses to one handle and a few small, fairly unnoticeable repairs to the body...

Ming Dynasty (1368-1643) Chinese blue and white porcelain baluster form vase with wide trumpet mouth decorated with a blue prunus motif. 9 1/2"H. Excellent condition. The irregular edge of the base is the typical result of the removal of the vase from the kiln. It is not a condition problem.

Four calligraphy works dating from the Edo period mounted on an antique two-panel Kama-byobu tearoom screen; the backing paper covered with minute gold flake. The centerpiece of the screen is a scene of Mt. Fuji next to the character Ryu (for Dragon). Enameled brilliant red kimono with lotus flowers in yellow and white, the shaped leaves in tones of turquoise and green. Obi is larkspur blue, black, turquoise and pink; folded fan has green flowers and gold clouds. Inner kimono collar is also gold.

This is a blue and white Chinese Export miniature "Long Eliza" trumpet-lipped vase comprising molded lobed panels having ladies and foliage in the Kang Hsi style, bearing a jade mark on the underside, It is in excellent condition and measures 4 1/2 in. approx.

This is an antique Chinese blue and white snuff bottle having a silver cover and decorated with The Eight Immortals, bearing a Qianlong mark. Most likely this is a spurious mark and the bottle is 19th c. It is in excellent condition and measures approx 2 1/8 in H

 

 

 

These 26 assortments of Japanese kasuri patchwork cloths came from old kimonos (some are new), thin to thick cotton. Some have tiny holes, fadings or repairs. One is lined with an ai dye blue fabric.

The largest one is 13 3/4" x 25 1/2"; the smallest 6" x 6 1/4". The total length together: 13 3/4" x approx. 23'(276 inches)

This fabric came from an old kimono, beautiful old thick cotton with light brown stripes in dark blue dye. Some color fading but no visible damages or stains. The measurements:

2 pieces of 13 1/3" x 8'5", with 4" cut in the middle.

Total length: 23'5" x 13 1/3"

A gorgeous female Bunraku doll with mobile head and hands in the original wooden box. She is 30 inches long from hemline to hair ornament. She has a very adult looking face and extremely ornate hair dress. The kimono is of silk with a shibori obi. This doll likely dates to the 1960s or early 1970s. A rare find for the collector of Bunraku items and Japanese dolls.

A Stunning combination of works by mother and son Koyama Kiyoko (1936-present) and Koyama Kenichi (1961-1992), both in the original signed wooden boxes. The Tokkuri, by Kiyoko, is of bulbous form decorated with slips of green glaze used sparingly around the neck. The black dye changed its color to a dark gray which is nice in its own way. It is a formal wear with 5 mon (family crest). Top half of the lining is done with a white silk and the bottom half is done with the same black silk from the front. The design from the front goes throughout the inside lining! A suit of Edo period armor featuring a Kebiki Ni Mai Do Gusoku, a 2 piece hinged armor of 8 closely knit rows of scale plates. 7 rows of 5 kusazuri hang from the do. Beautiful screen, the quality did not show here. The measurements are 66"L x 36"H. Hand painted on silk with silk matting and framed in the black lacquered wood. Condition is excellent except in the areas shown in the pictures. One dent did break the paper but not so visible (enlargement 5), small scratches on the right side corner in the matting area (enlargement 6)is minor. The damage in the back (done by a cat) is worse than the picture (enlargement #8).

These are worn with kimono and obi under Uchikake gown for the traditional Japanese wedding ceremony. There is a small area on the tissue holder and tanto bag with some power like stains. It is in new condition other than that. Great accent pieces for your home; two obi-jime (fat strings) can be used to tie the curtains, or use them with obis to create a wall décor. Be creative and have fun!

 

This type of fan is used for traditional Japanese dancing. Great home decor item combined with the other Japanese items. It is made out of black lacquer wooden sticks and a thick paper with designs on both side. Handpainted and new. The measurements are 20" across and 11 1/2" high. Black plastic wall hanger included.

Included in this Japanese kanzashi set are jade kanzashi, jade and red kougai and genuine black lacquer kanzashi with jade at the ends. One of the jade has scratches as shown.

 

A stunning early 20th century ai-zome chirimen Kimono decorated top to bottom with dragonflies flitting through tall bamboo grass. The cloth is in excellent condition, with no stains and is over 4 feet long, and 4 feet wide at the shoulder. The collar has been lightly sewn with a protective piece of cloth that can be easily removed for display (see last picture), or left on to protect it from daily wear. An extremely fine bronze Koro in the form of a mythical Kirin by Living National Treasure Katori Masahiko (1899-1988). Masahiko, a graduate of Tokyo National University of Art, went on to an illustrious career. Unlike his colleagues, he produced very limited numbers of his pieces, often only one. Hagi Yaki is a thick, grained pottery with a thin yellowish-white or bluish-pink glaze with large crackles. It is originated by a Korean potter as many other Japanese potteries are.
