A beautiful robins’-egg-blue gu-shaped vase with ring handles and engraved decoration by Ito Tozan with the original rosewood stand dating from the early 20th century (c. 1920). The pale blue bleeds to white over the high points of the decoration, the florals raised about the bulbous center and highlighting the rim and edges of the beast head handles. Meanwhile pools of dark shadow the fretwork emanating up and down the body...

 

A hermitage lost in the early blossoms of the plum forest, ink and light color inside a wide gold border and mulberry frame typical of the Taisho era. Gold powder has been liberally applied intimating a shimmering mist throughout, creating an ethereal quality. Signed in the upper left corner, it is 68 x 149 inches (172.5 x 378 cm) and in overall fine condition. Akashi Shoun was born in Osaka on March 12, 1867, the first year of the Meiji era and a time of great change in Japan...

 

Oversized Japanese "sosaku hanga" woodblock print by Jun'ichiro Sekino (1914-1988) titled "Boy and His Cat." dated 1957. The artist's white ink signature and red seal are at the lower right corner of the image. The edition number 51/100 and the date are in pencil at the left side of the bottom margin. The right side of the bottom margin holds "Jun Sekino" in black ink. Image size: 24 1/2" x 12 3/8" plus full margins. The framed size is about 36 1/2" x 24 3/4." Very good overall condition...

Waves thrash about in a playful frenzy below the calm watchful eye of a full moon partly blanketed by dark clouds in this extraordinary painting signed Kagyo dating from the later 19th century. It is bordered in ivory colored brocade embellished with clouds extended in golden brown silk and features ivory rollers. The scroll is 21-1/2 by 79 inches 855 x 200 cm) and, aside from minor bands of yellowing of the silk expected of age, is in fine condition...

 

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 17". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan was Moriya Kazuo, who was born on Septemeber 4th, 1928 (Showa 3.) A fox and cubs under the crescent moon and falling leaves by Hotta Shuso (b. 1894) in a style representative of the Taisho era. Light color on silk in a pale green silk border with bone rollers. The scroll is 21-1/2 x 86 inches (55 x 219 cm) and in fine condition but for a faint discoloration in border top and bottom.
Hotta Shuso (1894-1954) was born in Nagano prefecture and studied under Ikegami Shuho, settling in Tokyo...

A massive evocative painting exhibited at the first Bunten National Exhibition in 1908 by Ito Koun enclosed in a large period wooden box and pblished in the Nitten-shi series volume I. It is performed with pigment on silk, and shows that soft, almost mystical touch typical of late Meiji Rekishi-ga historical imagery. The samurai crouches at the gate, letting fly arrows at his overwhelming opponents...

A Gasaku joint effort by Kyoto porcelain master Takahashi Dohachi V and Scholar artist Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924) dating from the late Meiji to Taisho period. Enigmatic Characters in cobalt strike firmly from the smooth alabaster surface. The bowl is 4-3/4 inches (12 cm) diameter, 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Written on the side is Sho-Do Ki? Sue, Nyu Chyu? Ho-nari followed by the signature Tessai Gai-shi...

A six panel gold screen decorated in a style harkening to the first half of the Edo featuring angular trees interspersed with blossoming cherries, a torrent splashing angrily through the right quarter topped with moriage gold clouds. Many repairs and losses to the heavy pigments attest to the great age of the painting. Excellent size for wall mounting, it is 62 x 138 inches (157.5 x 350 cm). The border is from a later mounting. A spectacular black lacquered wooden sign carved with bold characters over a gold gilded carp swimming through a torrent of waves dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. It is in fine condition, with only minor marks typical of age. It measures 4 feet (121 cm) long, 14 inches (35 cm) wide and is 1-1/2 inches (3.5 cm) thick at the frame edge.

A lovely set of Taisho period studio pottery Tokkuri sake decanters; the very thin walls made of fine clay covered in earth-toned glassy glaze crackled along drip edges. A bundle of twigs alongside a kindling hearth are painted in iron on the side, with a grinding bowl and pestle of dark clay in raised relief. Along the base of one is the artists stamp reading Hozan. The base diameter is 2-1/4 inches (5.7 cm) and they stand 4-3/4 (12 cm) tall...

A very fine early 20th century screen hand-painted simply and exquisitely with the mixing branches of a blossoming cherry and both fresh green and red maple. The painstaking detail in each individual leaf and flower is breathtaking. The awesome scene is triple bordered inside a frame of green brocade, red and black silk and gold. We have had the screen re-backed with original style forest green paper and replaced the black wooden frame. It measures 31-1/2 by 66-1/2 inches (80 by 169 cm).

A porcelain Koro by Mashimizu Zoroku II and decorated with a tiger by Tomita Keisen and enclosed in the original wooden box signed by both artists. It is 12 cm (5 inches) diameter, the same height with a solid silver hoya of woven net weave by signed by Koju.

This is a genuine theater puppet kashira representing the character Osome. It is not a souvenir. As you can see it is quite clean, however there are three faint vertical cracks in the gofun covering, beside the nose and up the right cheek. The gofun is stable.
