A worker makes his way through the autumn tinged hills, home just a few steps away in this brilliant Nanga work by Hashimoto Kansetsu enclosed in the original signed wooden box which is in turn enclosed in a red lacquered wooden box (Nijubako). Light color on silk mounted in a superb frame of blue silk with patterned with dragon dials and featuring large ivory rollers. The scroll measures 22 x 85-1/2 inches (58 x 217 cm) and is in excellent condition...

Finely crackled which glaze covers this late Meiji Chinese inspired form clearly stamped inside the footring Tozan Ito Tozan. There is an incredible sense of mastery in the concise lines and perfectly sculpted form. It is 13 inches (33 cm) tall, 10 inches (26 cm) diameter and in excellent condition, enclosed in an older custom made wooden box.

When you look at an obi like this, you know why the name "Nishijin" is so known. This is a very formal obi, the biggest obi that I have seen, 13" wide and 154" long. Just a perfect piece for the formal dining room. It is large enough to cover two formal dining room tables. The colors are pastel, very gentle. When this obi was woven, the gold thread was woven in together. Every dot and line that you see in these pictures is the gold thread. It is a thick textile without a thick padding...

A superb Bizen Yaki Okimono of an Okoze (stonefish) by ceramic artist Takahashi Satoshi (b. 1934) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The features of the beastly creature are very well defined, with each spine accentuated by the natural color of the flame, giving the stonefish a realistic appearance. It is 12-1/2 inches (32 cm) long. Satoshi apprenticed to Kanashige Toshiuemon, has been the recipient of numerous awards and currently resides in Okayama prefecture...

A water-worn bowl of natural wood lacquered inside with black and gilded, leaving black lacquer on the rim, to create a startling contrast between the mirror like black, shining gold and ancient weathered wood. It is enclosed in a period wooden box titled Jidai Kihachi Sunabachi (antique Wooden Sunabachi Bowl). It measures 34.5 x 30 x 11 cm (14 x 12 x 4 inches). There are two hairline cracks in the gold (see photos).

 

A late Edo period (19th century) image known as the Nehanzu, death of the Buddha. It is absolutely fantastic, one of the best painted I have ever seen. An impressive, Mingei carved wood kiseruzutsu (a pipe case or holder worn similarly as a sashi netsuke) with snake and frog decoration - quite appropriate for the 'year of the snake' and a tiny compass with inlaid into one corner. Depicted are a snake coiled around a weathered log apparently in ready ambush for a frog perched on the other end - both with pierced bone or stag antler inlaid eyes...

An antique cast bronze waniguchi bell or gong, the type used to hang in front of places of prayer and under temple eaves dated 1710. Often these can be found hanging over saisen-bako where the bell is rung by clanging a dangling rope with wooden corbel against the bell to awaken the gods; coins are tossed and a prayer given. Anyone who has been to a Japanese Temple or Shrine may have noticed one. A much thinner cast than the later bell we are offering

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 5.125". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. This particular shape was called an "ezuko" (Basket child) in the local Miyagi vernacular. The artisan was Oyama Kesaki, who was born on March 25th, 1940 (Showa 15.) One of two paintings currently offered by the highly sought after literati artist Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) featuring an erratic image of the full moon seen through bristling pine performed in thin ink on paper and enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1925. The brazen brushwork will rattle images of the subtleties of Japanese art, and yet the scene is at once calming...

An exquisite landscape circles the body of this voluminous ballister form by Eiraku Zengoro XV (Shozen) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 15 inches (38 cm) tall, 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Eiraku Shozen (1879-1932) was the backbone of the family tradition after the passing of his father in 1909, and worked tirelessly to maintain the family reputation...

Gnarled plums cover the unusual rich blue ground of this antique tsubo vase from the Arita kilns dating from the early 20th century. It is 14-1/2 inches (37 cm) tall and in fine condition, signed on the base. The decoration is performed entirely in overglaze enamels with a gold rim,and is both vivid and fresh. One of the more unusual pieces I have seen from this region. It is signed on the base in Red Arita sei Miyuki Gama

The work on this superb Meiji p. Kutani vase would easily rival that of the greatest studios of the time (and surpass those of today!). Chrysanthemum and other flowers in overglaze enamels spread their brilliant foliage over the whit pebble textured moriage shoulder, Gold fading to white below the bamboo fence-like belt inlayed with kiri-kane gold and silver diamonds. Dew drops of gold moriage cling to the large leaves while plums blossom below...

Very large Japanese Taisho to early Showa period cloisonné enamel wide shouldered vase tapering to a narrow base decorated with a dense assorted floral spray on the front and a single flower to the back all set against a dark blue ground. Copper substrate, base and rims. Circa 1915-1930. 14 5/8” high x about 8 1/2” wide. Very good overall condition. There are faintly visible spider crack scratches to the blue ground...

A conical Jingasa battle hat 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) high, 14-1/2 inches (37 cm) diameter entirely gilded outside with genuine gold. Inside is lacquered black and retains the tie holds for the liner. There is some writing within, and a maru-ichi crest. There is damage to the peak and edges, but is quite impressive looking, and was likely used by the immediate vanguard of the Daimyo. One of two variations we have, they are from Omi province, just outside of Kyoto in old Japan.

Rare Japanese Edo period woodblock print pentaptych depicting five 16th century Takeda warriors involved in the Kawanakajima campaigns against the forces of Uesugi Kenshin by Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) published by Ebisuya Shoshichi (Kinshodo) circa 1845.
