Of Janus form, with faces and bird beaks on opposing sides, this large food storage vessel is from the Chambri Lakes region, near the Sepik River in New Guinea. Formed of the local clay by the women, the decoration and paint was applied by the men, in honor of ancestral beings. At the center of the robe is a rank badge holding a crane, indicating the gentleman is a civil official. The calligraphy states the bearded official is 41 years old.
