Early portrait of a gentleman in dark coat with white shirt and ascot, mid to early 19th century. With frame it measures 15" x 12", and the stretcher measures 13 3/8" x 10 3/8". Stretcher appears old, but may not be original. Frame is not period, but has good age, gold leaf over wood. The canvas is stable and shows craquelure over the entire surface, visible in close up photos. Unsigned, which is usually the case, and there is no information as to the identity of the sitter...

A superbly rendered and atmospheric lifetime woodblock print by the famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled "Ikegami Honmonji Temple" (Honmonji Temple in Snow). First published in 1931, this is an artist's lifetime strike from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. This print is Oban size (14-1/4" x 9-1/2" image size, 19-3/4" x 14-1/4" frame size). It has the 6 mm. red lifetime seal of the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (seal used from 1946-57)...
