This is a rare painting on shikishi board by famous Kyoto artist Tokuriki Tomikichiro. He was best known for his prints, but was originally trained as a painter.
Brushed using ink and a limited color pallet, Tokuriki depicted a pair of lesser cuckoo (hototogisu 杜鵑) perched on a blossoming plum tree, a harbinger of spring.
Painted in late 1980s, and is 27.1 by 24.2 cm.
