Owned by Mossi girls and women, small figures like these that we call "dolls" could function both as a toy for a young girl or as an object to promote the fertility of a woman.
This is an all original milliner doll with paper mache head and hand carved wooden arms and legs. She has on a brown/tan dress with a scalloped petticoat and full length pantaloons. All are hand sewn. She has on green painted shoes. You can see in the picture as well as feel the hand carving of the arms and legs. You can see she has crazing on her face but it is not fragile or flaking off. Her clothing is in good condition but has age related discoloring. She is 10" tall and is circa 1840...
This sweet little all hand sewn cloth doll is wearing an antique red cotton dress. Her nice little chunky body has shaped legs and feet. Her arms also a shaped and end in a well defined mitten hand. Her embroidered face is done in a brown floss and her hair is very bold over lapping stitches giving it a very folky look. She is jointed shoulders and hip. She is very firmly packed with rags...
Nice homemade linen boy doll with embroidered face, cute ears, black curly hair wearing a red one piece outfit with a sweater over it. The red wool suit is sewn on with I think was a good idea by this mother. He wouldn't still have it on right now if she hadn't. It is brimmed with velvet ribbon and the neck and on the homemade belt around his waist. He has woolen shoes on his feet that are also attached. Over this he has a charcoal wool sweater that keeps him warm...
Well I am not sure Mother Congress would recognize this doll unless she took off her dress. This doll has to have had many hundreds of hours of play. The dress is obviously not original but I am sure it is nicer than a lot of dresses she has worn. She is 18" tall, cotton stuffed, many stitches replaces but surprisingly no holes just a worn area at the tip of her right hand. She sure isn't a Sunday doll but she could use a few understanding friends!

She is a single layer stockinette (stocking) doll when most often they are doubled layer as the maker realizes the white cotton showing through the one layer is not really black anymore but gray. This was cleverly handled by making her hair gray also. She is big and has a chunky body firmly stuffed. Her arms and legs are jointed so she sits easily...
Antique all rag stuffed stockinette black doll with a face that says she will tell no secrets. She has on what I believe to be her original clothes, a brown and tan check dress with red trim and a bandana apron over it. She has on a petticoat that maybe was a curtain and blue and white ticking underwear. Her face is very plain with shoe button eyes and applied knit fabric for a mouth. Her hair is real fur and is beautifully fitted to her head. She has attached arms and legs. She is really packed...
