What a wonderful little pencil face doll with rolled legs and arms, the arms are attached not wrapped around like you see sometimes, and wearing the best brown calico dress. When I bought this doll I was sure that the brown calico dress that I have been holding on to was going to fit her perfectly and it did and does. The doll and the dress are all hand sewn. Under the dress her bloomers and petticoat are sewn on as well as a blouse she is wearing...

I haven't seen as little a painted oilcloth doll as this one. Because of that I used the black light on her but she is old and has no repaint. Her face us really expertly painted, see closeup. The bottom parts of her arms and legs and her head and shoulders are also painted oilcloth. The paint has age cracking but isn't lifting. She is all hinged so she sits easily. The dress is sewn on her and been reworked at some point to fit her...

Here are two very nice paper doll dresses made with crepe paper and Dresden paper lace trim from the 1840's The 7" dress is exquisite with watercolor hand painted floral decoration. This dress has a partial unbleached paper backing that is all original. It has a slightly irregular hemline and a dark spot just above the hemline. The smaller dress is 3 1/2" and has Dresden stars across the bodice. It has a paper back that is two fold to go over the paper dolls head...

This is a collection of paper doll dresses from the 1840-50's. They are all cut from tissue paper and glued to blue lined school book paper of that era. The lace looks and feels like Dresden pressed paper. Some of the dresses have backs, fronts and then open to allow to drop over the paper doll's head, like a billboard A frame. Some have names like Flora, written on the inside. One reads Sunday, another Eliza and one that says Dora...

Alice has blue eyes, orange nose and red line mouth that is sad or more likely it was straight across and now the ends are not tacked down so they droop. She is hand sewn from a nice homespun linen but her legs are a cotton and of a lesser quality. I think the legs are original maybe they ran out of the homespun. She has on a sweet white dress with lace at the top and front for trim and a belt sewn on with the name, Alice, embroidered on it...

This is a big very uncomplicated black cloth doll with a straight forward embroidered face. She is made from black sateen fabric. She is cotton stuffed pretty firmly. Her arms are sewn on but her legs are continuous. But like many of the dolls made this way, she sits nicely having been forced to sit for many years. Her dress fits really nicely but I doubt that it is original. Her pantaloons are sewn on but there are no holes or tears anywhere on her...

This is an all original milliner doll with paper mache head and hand carved wooden arms and legs. She has on a brown/tan dress with a scalloped petticoat and full length pantaloons. All are hand sewn. She has on green painted shoes. You can see in the picture as well as feel the hand carving of the arms and legs. You can see she has crazing on her face but it is not fragile or flaking off...

This rag stump doll is all original other than the bonnet I put on her. She has a drawn pencil face. her dress goes up into her head in the back so she was rolled and wrapped and part of the material in the dress is in the head. Maybe to keep the dress on. She has a fine piece of linen over the cotton for her face and it wraps around and is sewn on the back of her head. See picture and also note the brown thread that may have held on some kind of hair. Her arms are rolled and are attached to her...

This is a very nice black cloth doll from Maine. She has a blank face and doesn't look like she every had features. Her hair is mohair but most of the hair is gone, although some still is remaining in the front. She is a nice brown cotton broadcloth. She is wearing soft blue calico dress with matching calico pink fabric trim. She is cotton stuffed and rather firmly packed. Her arms and legs are jointed so she sits nicely. She is 18" tall and is circa 1910.

This large antique black doll has embroidered face with beads for her eyes and mouth, I have never seen this before on a black doll. Her nose I think is would and covered with embroidery floss. He eyebrows are raised also with the use of the same embroidery floss as the nose. She has the lambs wool astrakhan hair. The fabric on her face is a fine silk wool that has shredded on her cheeks but there are several layers of cloth under it so it isn't so obvious. She has mitten hands, nicely turned ...

This is a very country version of an early the Georgian era wooden doll. She is painted gray and I think it is the original paint. The features are carved into the face and she has one tooth right in the middle of her mouth. She is about 7" tall and has nice worn patina. She is circa 1790-1820 and is very dear.

The wooden doll fragment has some original paint. She is all one piece of wood even her tiny nose. She has a touch of original pink on both cheeks. She has some black paint on part of the back of her head that was her hair. She feels lovely to the touch. She is a real treasure. She is not quite 8" tall and is circa 1790-1820.

This little black rag doll has on flannel pants and a tan and blue striped pants. The clothes are not original and he may not have had clothes originally. They are cute and fit him well. He is cotton stuffed rather firmly. He has neutral pencil face but I wide line for his mouth that makes him look happy. He is a wonderful simple all American rag doll. He is 14" tall and circa 1900

This the second one I have ever owned, a black doll with a coconut for her head. (There are three pictured in the book, (Black Dolls, From the collection of Deborah Neff.) This dear worried doll is 23" tall. Her body is black cotton and softly stuffed. Her head rests on her chest and I think it always has. Her clothes I think are original, a nice blue and white linen fabric blouse and skirt. Underneath she has on a cotton petticoat and a pretty tan scarf around her neck and a couple of head scar...

This doll couldn't get much cuter. She is a tight package, stuffed with cotton, the clothes fit her perfectly, figuratively and otherwise. Her face is made as a separate piece of fabric like it was a second face but after looking carefully at her I think it is her original face and it was how she was made. She has on pantaloons, petticoat and calico brown and tan print dress. On her head she is wearing an old straw hat theat is coming apart a little but is so great on her. I think everything mig...
