Watercolor and pencil on paper drawing of a red roofed village church surrounded by small houses and trees, 12 1/4" by 17 7/8" (20 3/4" by 25 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "V.J. Roux-Champion 1944). The drawing is a work of noted French artist VICTOR JOSEPH ROUX-CHAMPION (1871-1953). Condition is excellent with fresh colors and no water damage or foxing. The artist's works are offered at auction in England and the Continent.

Lithograph on paper of a clipper ship, 12 1/4" by 9 1/2", unframed, signed by the noted marine illustrator, painter and etcher/lithographer GORDON HOPE GRANT (1875-1962). Grant was born in San Francisco but is associated with the northeastern part of the country, his marine paintings and lithographs now eagerly sought out by dealers and collectors...

For the collector of rare, and desirable early Florida art: a watercolor painting titled in pencil lower left "Old Spanish House/St. Augustine", dated 1881, apparently not signed. The work, paper laid on a board, measures 9 3/4" by 13 3/4". An early 20th century 13 1/2" by 17 1/2" frame (not shown) accompanies the watercolor. On the reverse side of the board in modern times someone wrote "Attributed to William Turner Dannat" but this is highly unlikely...

For the aficionado of equine art, this is a beautifully composed watercolor and ink drawing of polo horses and players, signed at lower right by listed Arizona woman artist ALICE LORD MARSHALL (1895-1993). The work measures 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the mat and 18 1/2" by 23" as framed. I recently acquired this from her grandson, formerly of the Phoenix area, now living in Pacific Palisades, California...

Oil on canvas landscape with a home and small out building, possibly but not at all necessarily a California scene, measuring 10" by 14" (12 1/4" by 16 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right (I think in ink) "....... E. Miller" and dated there '32. The actual first part of the signature is difficult to read, but on the stretcher in pencil is written "E. E. Miller"...

Painting on board, 17 1/2" by 19 7/8" (24" by 28" as framed), signed at lower right "BIZLEY" (artist RICHARD BIZLEY, 1959-, of Dorset, England). Auctions of items relating to natural history are seeing intense interest from museums and individuals, and record prices are set regularly. This highly detailed and imaginative work brings the viewer to the Jurassic period (206 to 144 million years ago) with its depth and imagery...

Oil on canvas, 22" by 18" and 2 1/2" wide frame, unsigned, showing the famous Mountain of the Holy Cross in central Colorado, 100 miles west of Denver and 15 miles from Vail. This is a late 19th century painting, evidently one of many copies, by many artists, of the iconic 7' by 5' work by famous American artist Thomas Moran, which was completed in the year 1875. The painting is in compromised condition, with soiling, paint loss, punctures, and scrapes, but, I believe it worth restoring...

Watercolor, 9 7/8" by 14" inside the mat (16 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "N. White". This is a work showing, no doubt, the clipper ship Joseph Conrad, berthed at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The clipper was built in Denmark in 1882 and was renamed as the Joseph Conrad. It was built strictly as a training ship. The artist, NELSON COOK WHITE (1900-1989) painted a lot of marine subject matter, and a number of these works have appeared at auction in New England...

Oil on canvasboard, 16" by 20" and 3" of frame and liner, circa 1950's or 1960's I believe, signed at lower left by artist "G. Diehl". At one time I thought there was some possibility that this was a work by Finnish artist Gosta Diehl. The daughter of that artist, Franciska Sundholm, wrote me to say that this is definitely not a work by her father. So this is offered as simply a competently executed modernistic still life painting...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 14" by 18" (19" by 23 1/2" as framed/matted), American, dating likely from the late thirties to the mid fifties. The work is obviously by a talented artist, considering the way in which the flowering trellis vine has been depicted. There is a Somerville, New Jersey label on reverse from the framing outfit, from 1959, naming an Earl Potter from Potterville, NJ, but I don't believe this is the artist's name...

Scarce Currier and Ives lithograph print, sheet size 11" by 15", image area 8 1/2" by 12 3/8", titled "Prairie Hens". This is apparently a scarcer small folio image, as Cohenour prices it over $400 in his Currier price guide. The print is in acceptable condition, with the image area generally clean, and only one tiny spot of foxing visible, although there is a diagonal light crease at upper right corner, visible only when viewed in raking light...

A finely painted still life masterpiece, 23" by 28" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), circa 1950's, signed at lower left by Hungarian artist ROMEK ARPAD (1883-1960). The work features copper pots and a number of glass vessels, some broken, painted in the artist's signature naturalistic, realistic style. Arpad was born in Budapest and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there under Ede Bello and Laszlo Hegedus. He is known for his table top still life works in this vein but also painted some lan...

Charcoal drawing on paper, unframed, 8 1/4" by 6", signed at lower left by the important, well-known German illustrator artist and photographer, HEINRICH ZILLE (1858-1929). Zille's works have exceeded $60,000 at German auctions, and even simple charcoal drawings commonly bring up to about the $10,000 range, those with color being especially desirable. He was born in Dresden and was in Berlin as a child, already showing artistic promise. At an early age he was already an apprentice to a lithog...

Oil on canvas painting completely in the distinctive sepia tones manner often employed by the artist, 14" by 18" (19 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed), the subject the famous aspen and mountains of northern New Mexico, signed at lower left and notated there "Taos" by well listed artist THOMAS L. LEWIS (1907-1978). Lewis was born near Houston and was already a professional artist by age 19. Originally he painted scenes of the American South, including swamps and cypress, but after service in World War...

Large size lithograph print in elegant shades of gray, blacks and cream, 34" by 19 1/2", (and 41 1/2" by 26 1/2" in quality mid century frame), numbered 36/95 at lower left, and pencil signed at lower right, by the only recently deceased important Swiss modernist artist, HANS ERNI (1909-2015) . The subject is essentially an allegory of motherhood---a nude standing woman holding in her arms a nursing child. Even among Erni's many lithographs, this particular image stands out as monumental, iconi...

Finely executed PAIR of drawings in gouache, each 14" by 10" (21 1/2" by 18" framed), each featuring a 19th century kachina doll of the Southwest against a black neutral background. The artist signed each work "M. Smith" and on backing board of each is written "Antique Kachina/A Supernatural Being--/A Spirit Helper". I do not know the identity of the artist; the works were acquired in the Phoenix area. Obviously he/she has carefully studied and has extensive knowledge of the Hopi kachina doll...

An oil on canvasboard of a Victorian era house in all its splendor, the work titled on reverse "The Lennox House" (along with its' $50 original price), and signed at lower right, by well listed California artist WILFRID TAYLOR MILLS (1912-1988). The work, on canvasboard, measures 20" by 16" (29 1/2" by 25 1/2" as framed). Mills was born in California. He spent some time teaching in New York, before returning to Southern California, where he painted for many years until his death in La Crescen...

Oil on canvas painting, 14" by 18", (22" by 26" in circa 1950's quality frame), the subject several traditional Jewish musicians at their craft, signed at lower left by the well listed Jewish artist MAX BAND (1900-1974). Band was born in Lithuania and spent much of his earlier life in Paris, after study at the Berlin Academy. His works often feature Judaic themes, though subject matter can range from florals to European urban vistas to genre and portraits. In 1940, presumably as war clouds threa...
