This is a wonderful large watercolor (18 1/2" by 27"----28" by 36" as framed) executed in the nineteenth century by English artist WALTER TOMLINSON (ca. 1833-1909). The scene is Ann Hathaway's famous cottage in Stratford-on-Avon, which Shakespeare lovers will recognize as the town associated closely with the Bard himself. When I first saw this I assumed it was a print and was amazed to find that it was indeed an original work of art...

PAIR of watercolor still life paintings of floral subjects, 8 1/2" by 7" inside the mat (16" by 14" framed), circa mid 19th century, likely American (purchased in Maine). Note the exquisite detail and color. Hand drawn mats add to the vintage appeal. Later 20th century gold frames are in good condition. One mat has old browning/possible water damage at lower right, not affecting the art.

An unframed antique, 19th century watercolor of two Indians paddling a canoe in a raging small river between steep cliffs, signed at lower right with what appears as "Catherine Stuart 1879". The 7 5/8" by 10 3/4" work strongly reminiscent of paintings and watercolors by noted Canadian artists Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901), Frederick Arthur Verner (1836-1928). Strangely, an online search has not turned up information on the present artist...

A pencil drawing (and touches of white gouache) of the scenery with figures in a small rowboat, around the northeastern end of New York State's Lake George, notably the prominent "Anthony's Nose" feature, dated 1840 at lower right and titled there "L. George". There is no artist signature. This is an exceptionally early work and it would be interesting to know the identity of the artist...

Original antique English watercolor titled "Fox Gloves by Stream" signed by Joseph Poole Addey (1852-1922), dated 1889. Addey was an especially gifted watercolorist. Born in Dublin, he studied at the Royal Dublin Society School of Design and the Cork School of Art. He began exhibiting at the RHA in 1877, and over the next forty years showed over 130 paintings. An antique watercolor landscape (17 1/2" by 29 1/2", and 25 1/2" by 37 1/2" framed) featuring a peaceful scene of a house on a northeastern lake, a sail boat lazily floating by, signed lower right and dated there 1889 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910). The artist painted from Maryland to Maine, visited Cuba and apparently Italy, and even apparently spent a short time on the Pacific coast at Monterey, California...

Watercolor and white gouache highlighting on heavy paper landscape, 7 3/4" by 10 1/4", unframed (an early ruled mat with handwritten title and "19th CENTy." surrounds it), unsigned, the subject a hilly location in India (possibly a "hill station" in the foothills of the Himalayas). Note the fine detail including structures, tall skinny palms, a flag pole, etc. This probably dates to the 1860's or 1870's, and was likely executed by an English artist traveling through the region at the time...
