Max Thorek (1880-1960) was considered one of the outstanding surgeons of all time, but he was also noted as a very talented photographer, his efforts peaking in the 1930's and 1940's when he contributed mightily to the pictorialist movement. This original photograph itself measures 9 5/8" by 12 1/2" (other measurements 12 3/4" by 14 3/4" inside the outer, modern mat, and 17 3/4" by 21 3/4" as framed)...

This is an oil on canvas painting (measuring 7 3/4" by 9 3/4", plus very thin simple wood frame), laid down on a board, by the noted Northern California artist JOHN HENRY RAMM (1879-1948). It is titled on the reverse in the artist's own distinctive handwriting "Looking Down Bush Street" and initialed and dated 1930 (not signed on front, but, this is definitely the artist's way of signing; I have handled a number of his works in the past)...

This is a beautiful, elegant, understated winter landscape oil painting on panel, signed at lower right by noted Avon, Connecticut impressionist painter CONSTANT RAPHAEL FURRICK (1888-1966), measuring 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" (19" by 23" as framed). Strangely, considering the quality of the work, there seems to be little information available on the artist. He was I believe born in Poland. Furrick's work is scarce, with few auction records...

This is an oil on canvas, 20" by 30", signed at lower right "J.B. Radway", who was a 19th century California listed artist, (JESSE B. RADWAY, 1826-c. 1905), but the subject is given on the stretcher as "on the North Cheyenne, Col.". According to the Hughes listing, Radway was born in New York in 1826, and was a resident of Silver Lake, Kansas in 1880, Topeka, Kansas in 1884-85, Alameda, California in 1887, and Vineland, New Jersey in 1900. He is believed to have died in New Jersey in about 1905...

Watercolor and ink on paper, 15 1/2" by 7 1/2" plus 2" of framing on a side, signed at lower right by School of Paris twentieth century French artist JEAN CHEVOLLEAU (1924-1996). Chevolleau is today considered a part of the School of Paris (in fact he is listed in that landmark book by that name). His works are generally modern, some abstract or completely so. For the collector of fine photographs, here is a scarce or rare example of the work of major American photographer IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM (1883-1976). The image is of Anna Freud (1895-1982), the youngest child of famed psychologist Sigmund Freud, taken in 1959. The younger Freud became a specialist in child development and psychoanalysis, and today there is a foundation in London which carries on her work (google "anna freud centre")...

This is a very fine watercolor and gouache painting featuring a number horsemen outfitted in their best formal red riding coats, their accompanying hounds in the heat of the fox hunt. The artist was the very well listed watercolorist ALFRED VILLIERS FARNSWORTH (1858-1908). Farnsworth signed the painting at lower right and dated it there 1906, the year of the great San Francisco earthquake.
